I am writing this for my brother, Marcus Rightsell. On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, Marcus was involved in a head-on collision with a semi dump truck while driving back to work on his lunch break. Marcus had to be extricated from the vehicle, and life-saving measures were performed as he was life-flighted to the University of Nebraska Med Center in critical condition.
As of today, March 19, 2026, Marcus remains in the ICU, sedated and intubated, as machines are continuing to breathe for him at 100%. He has had continued BP issues, which are closely being monitored, and will have several stages of surgeries to fix his legs. We have confirmed his left femur is shattered right above the knee and will require a halo brace post-surgery. His right leg, currently in traction, has a broken femur along with both his tibia and fibula at his ankle, which will also result in a halo brace post-surgery.
At this time, we know scans are clear, but we cannot be sure of any neurological deficits or nerve damage since we have not been able to remove his breathing tubes to actually talk to him. However, we do know immediately after the accident he was initially responsive, so we remain extremely hopeful.
Marcus's road to recovery is going to be very long, including multiple surgeries, extended time in the hospital, extensive rehab for his legs, missed work, along with any additional things that might come up as we navigate this time.
We are asking for help as Marcus is going to be off work and does have a young child that he provides for.
