On December 22nd, Marc discovered a large lump in his throat. Within days, everything changed. After multiple appointments and testing, doctors found necrotic lymph nodes and confirmed metastatic carcinoma. Further pathology revealed the diagnosis: medullary thyroid cancer. Marc has a large, painful mass in his throat that has made swallowing difficult and has permanently affected his vocal cords. On March 9th, he will undergo surgery to remove his thyroid and all the neck lymph nodes. Because Marc also has congestive heart failure, doctors must carefully tailor his treatment plan around his heart condition. This is not a simple road.
Marc and Robin have been married for 15 years, but their story began long before that. They met and dated in high school, went their separate ways, and later found their way back to each other. Together they’ve built a beautiful family — four children and three grandchildren — rooted in resilience and hard work. They live in Valley Springs and own a small construction business. Like many self-employed families, their income depends entirely on Marc’s ability to work. There is no disability policy. No paid medical leave. No unemployment safety net.
In recent months, their business has been hit hard with unexpected setbacks and financial strain. Now, with surgery and treatment ahead, Marc will not be able to work for a period of time. At the same time, they are facing urgent financial obligations tied to maintaining their contractor’s license — without it, they cannot legally operate their business, which would eliminate their ability to earn income in the future. They are doing everything they can to stay afloat, but this season has brought more than any one family should have to carry alone.
If you know Marc and Robin, you know they are proud, hardworking people who have always shown up for others. This is one of those moments where community truly matters. Let’s help carry them through this fight — so they can focus on healing, family, and the road ahead.
