Marco Francisio Ableza Hokila was born six weeks premature alongside his twin brother. From the very beginning, Marco faced health challenges, but it wasn’t until he was sixteen that his journey took a dramatic turn. After experiencing an anxiety attack at school, Marco visited a pediatric doctor who noticed his unusually high blood pressure. This led to lab tests and, ultimately, a diagnosis of Stage 2 Chronic Kidney Disease. A biopsy revealed scar tissue, and doctors explained that Marco would eventually need a kidney transplant and dialysis. His twin brother was tested as a potential donor, but due to his own health issues, he was unable to help.
Marco’s resilience has been remarkable. He began seeing a nephrologist and, in August 2024, was hospitalized for a month after a port was placed for home dialysis. His blood pressure became so severe that he nearly lost his eyesight. Despite these hardships, Marco never stopped working or supporting his family. Even while battling his illness, he remained a source of strength for those around him. Marco is currently on the transplant list and has come close to receiving a kidney, but medical complications have delayed the procedure. Now, Marco and his mom must travel to Sioux Falls several times a month, facing time away from work, mounting travel expenses, car troubles, and the overwhelming cost of medication and treatments without medical insurance.
The donated funds will be used for travel, medical expenses, and daily survival for Marco and his family. It is a tough time for everyone with rising costs and skyrocketing health care expenses. I am asking the community to help Marco and his family—if you can give even a small amount, it will make a difference for this struggling family.
