Manuel Trujillo, our beloved friend and community figure in the SF Latino music and arts scene, suffered a massive stroke on the morning of March 5th. Had his partner Artemisa “Arte” not been home to call 911, he may not be with us today. He was hospitalized for almost a month. Fortunately he is now out of the hospital, but he is still missing half of the right side of his cranium. It was removed to relieve the blood pressure in his brain. For the first couple of weeks, he lost all mobility on the left side of his whole body. But Manuel’s ever-positive and funny attitude has helped him heal fast and tackle the intense physical and speech therapy. He has one more surgery left to replace his skull bone with a prosthetic. He has a long road of recovery ahead before he will be able to walk on his own and use his left arm again.

Fortunately, Manuel and Arte have good health insurance and sick leave from work, but the loss of work and time for the past month, and the long road ahead, will impact them financially. Arte and his sister Sandra are now his primary caretakers. I have created this fundraiser to ease the financial burden that this tragic situation has caused in just basic daily tasks and the nightmare of hospital and insurance bureaucracy that now falls on only Arte.

I would be so grateful if you donate to Manuel’s recovery fund. He is one of my best friends, whom I met in 2002 when I was the resident composer and sound designer for Teatro Jornalero. Manuel was one of the actors for this company made of immigrant and undocumented day laborers and domestic workers. We instantly became friends. Manuel went on to found Noches Bohemias, a monthly series featuring Bay Area and touring Latin folk musicians. Together we curated art shows, music events, and threw great parties! Over the years he became a great folk guitarist and singer, forming Dueto Arte (with Arte), a duo playing traditional Mexican ballads, boleros, and corridos from the 1930s to 1950s.

Manuel always knows how to have fun, has an infectious laugh, loves going to concerts, and tells goofy jokes after a few drinks. He always has helped others in their times of need, whether in remodeling an apartment, fixing a car, giving rides, donating construction materials, lending sound gear, or promoting and fundraising for other artists.

Help him get back to his old wild, joyful, and funny self, and help Arte with the large caregiving role ahead of her. Our goal is $5000, but GoFundme is starting the campaign at $1800, until donations reach a decent level.

Manuel Trujillo, nuestro querido amigo y figura fundamental en la escena musical y artística latina de San Francisco, sufrió un derrame cerebral masivo la mañana del 5 de marzo.

Si su pareja, Artemisa “Arte”, no hubiera estado en casa para llamar al 911, es posible que hoy no estuviera con nosotros.

Manuel estuvo hospitalizado durante casi un mes. Afortunadamente, ya ha sido dado de alta, pero aún enfrenta un proceso médico complejo: actualmente le falta una parte del lado derecho del cráneo, que fue removida para aliviar la presión en su cerebro tras el derrame.

Durante las primeras semanas, perdió completamente la movilidad del lado izquierdo de su cuerpo. Sin embargo, su actitud positiva, su gran sentido del humor y su espíritu inquebrantable han sido clave en su recuperación. Gracias a ello, ha avanzado notablemente en sus terapias físicas y del habla.

Aún le queda una cirugía importante para reemplazar la parte del cráneo con una prótesis, y el camino hacia su recuperación total será largo. Pasará tiempo antes de que pueda volver a caminar por sí mismo o recuperar plenamente el uso de su brazo izquierdo.

Afortunadamente, Manuel y Arte cuentan con seguro médico y licencias laborales. Sin embargo, la pérdida de ingresos durante este último mes —y la que continuará en los meses por venir— representa una carga económica significativa.

Arte y su hermana Sandra son ahora sus cuidadoras principales, enfrentando no solo las exigencias del cuidado diario, sino también la abrumadora burocracia médica y de seguros.

Por ello, hemos creado este fondo de apoyo, con la esperanza de aliviar un poco el peso financiero que esta situación ha generado.

Manuel es uno de mis mejores amigos. Nos conocimos en 2002, cuando yo era compositor residente y diseñador de sonido en Teatro Jornalero. Él formaba parte del elenco, un grupo de actores integrado por jornaleros y trabajadoras domésticas inmigrantes, muchos de ellos indocumentados. Desde entonces, nuestra amistad fue inmediata.

Además, se convirtió en un talentoso guitarrista y cantante de música tradicional mexicana, formando junto a Arte el dueto Dueto Arte, interpretando boleros, corridos y baladas de los años 30 a los 50.

Manuel es una persona que sabe disfrutar la vida: su risa es contagiosa, le encanta ir a conciertos y siempre tiene un chiste listo después de un par de tragos. Pero más allá de eso, es alguien que siempre ha estado para los demás: ayudando a remodelar viviendas, reparando autos, ofreciendo transporte, donando materiales, prestando equipo de sonido o apoyando a otros artistas con promoción y recaudación de fondos.

Hoy es momento de devolverle un poco de todo lo que él ha dado.

Ayudémoslo a recuperar su esencia: su alegría, su energía y ese espíritu libre que tanto lo caracteriza.
