Dear Students, Families, Teachers, and Alumni,

We are writing to share an important and time-sensitive update regarding the future of the Southern Minnesota School of Music, formerly known as The Mankato Suzuki School of Music and The Mankato School of Music.

Due to ongoing financial challenges and a significant funding shortfall, we are now facing the very real possibility of closing our doors at the end of April.

Over the past several years, our program has endured increasing financial strain. In 2025 alone, we lost more than $100,000 in anticipated grant funding, experienced the loss of a key partnership, and faced growing cash flow challenges tied to an outdated business model that no longer supports our expanding organization.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to our teachers. Their unwavering dedication to students and families—especially during this period of uncertainty—has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their impact is deeply valued and profoundly appreciated.

For almost 50 years, our organization has been a cherished part of the Mankato community. Today, we turn to that same community for support. As a nonprofit, we rely not only on tuition, but also on donations, grants, and charitable contributions.

While our organization has grown significantly—expanding in just eight years from 60 students and 2 teachers to over 220 students and 15+ teachers across 10 counties and 5 southern Minnesota partnerships—our funding model has not kept pace. Establishing a sustainable base of donor support is now critical to our survival.

Southern Minnesota School of Music – Donation Goal Plan
Why This Matters
We are more than a school—we are a lifeline for creativity, confidence, and community. Every dollar donated directly supports students, teachers, and access to the arts in Mankato and surrounding areas.

Donation Milestones & Impact
$25,000 — Keep the doors open
Continue weekly music lessons for students of all ages
Pay our dedicated teachers
Cover essential overhead costs (rent, utilities, basic operations)
This is survival. This keeps music alive right now.

$50,000 — Stability for the Next Month
Secure next month’s operating costs
Ensure consistent teacher pay
Maintain uninterrupted lessons for students
This provides breathing room and protects our students’ progress.

$100,000 — Reset and Rebuild
Catch up on outstanding balances
Pay back personal loans that kept the school afloat
Restore financial stability
This lifts a significant burden and gives the program a sustainable future.

$200,000 — Grow and Strengthen the Community
Invest in outreach and community partnerships
Expand advertising to reach more students
Develop new programs and events
Build long-term sustainability for the arts in our region
This allows the program to move from surviving to thriving.

The Bigger Picture
Every donation: Keeps music accessible to all income levels, supports local teachers and artists, provides a creative outlet for youth and adults and strengthens the cultural fabric of our community!

If this school has ever impacted you or could impact someone you love now is the time to act. Donate. Share. Be part of sustaining local music.

We are deeply grateful for this community and remain hopeful that, together, we can sustain and strengthen this program for the next 50 years and beyond!

With appreciation and urgency,

Riley Kolstad
