Support Mandy Sommer's Back Surgery Recovery

Our 39-year-old daughter, Mandy Sommer, has suffered from moderate to severe back pain resulting from a fall on an icy step when she was 19. Last weekend, her back went out for the umpteenth time, but this time it was exponentially worse than ever before. Her husband, Shawn, took her to ER, and then she was admitted to the hospital. The only real solution was surgery for a herniated disk in her lower back. The surgery occurred Wednesday afternoon, October 16. Thank God, everything went well, and her prognosis is very good. The surgeon said it was among the worst 10% of cases he had operated on.

She will be in recovery for about the next six weeks or so, which means she will not be able to return to work for a while. Also, they will have substantial out-of-pocket costs for the medical expenses incurred in this operation. Shawn has also been forced to take time off during this stressful event.
