Support Mallika's Quadriplegia Recovery
Mallika Namboothiri Patel,is a true spirit warrior.
At age 38 she was living life to the fullest with her husband and her 4 year old son Sai.
On July 18th, while driving to a promotional job interview, Mallika was involved in a traumatic car accident. Remarkably, she survived the accident but sustained a severe spinal cord injury that has rendered her a quadriplegic. Mallika underwent two emergent and highly complex spinal surgeries and after a short stay in the ICU, she began her road to recovery.
She then spent nearly three months at Rancho Los Amigos Acute Rehabilitation facility, where she participated in intense physical and occupational therapy daily and regained some strength and sensation in her shoulders and arms. Through it all, Mallika’s warrior spirit has helped her stay positive and patient, enduring challenges beyond what any able-bodied individual could imagine.
Though Mallika is home now, her journey to recovery is far from over. There is no cure for spinal cord injury. The main stay of treatment is physical and occupational therapy. She has been given a 1-2 % chance of regaining motor and sensory function below her shoulder. She is wheelchair bound and needs assistance with her activities of daily living. Insurance coverage is over. Daily outpatient rehabilitation will cost over $1000 a day and a 24-7 caregiver costs close to $1000 per day. She will likely need these services as well as medical equipment lifelong.
Spinal cord injury patients have the best chance of recovery within the first 12 months of their injury. Now is the time to help Mallika fight this battle and be part of the 1%. She taught her son how to walk; now she has to train her nervous system to walk again.
We humbly ask everyone who can contribute to Mallika’s care to donate to this GoFundMe page created for her benefit. The funds will be used to continue physical and occupational therapy at Casa Colina (an outpatient spinal cord injury rehab center), The Perfect step (a paralysis recovery center) and 24/7 caregiver services . We are grateful for your consideration.
