Support Malia's Fight for a New Heart

At the beginning of 2023, our daughter Malia was a happy, healthy little girl — full of life, energy, and joy. We never could’ve imagined how quickly everything would change. Out of nowhere, Malia began experiencing alarming symptoms that led to the devastating diagnosis of severe heart failure caused by restrictive cardiomyopathy — a rare and serious condition where the heart becomes too stiff to pump properly.

She was rushed into critical care and placed on ECMO (life support) for 3 days to stabilize her heart and lungs. After surviving that terrifying experience, we were eventually sent home, praying that her heart would recover with the help of medication. For a while, we held onto hope — but sadly, Malia’s condition continued to decline.

She was readmitted and quickly placed on two Berlin VADs (ventricular assist devices) — one on each side of her heart — to keep her alive while she waits for a heart transplant. These machines are now doing the work her heart can no longer manage. As parents, it’s been heartbreaking to watch her go through so much, but Malia has continued to fight with strength and bravery beyond her years.

We are now on Day 19 in the hospital, living day to day, with no idea how long the wait for a new heart will be. Every day brings new challenges, and this journey has taken a huge toll on our family emotionally, physically, and financially.
