My name is Lexie Borawski, and I am raising funds to provide Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to my son, Malaki.
Malaki (age 1) is diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy. All four of his limbs are affected and this greatly impacts his daily life. He is delayed in meeting developmental milestones, and his biggest challenge is his increased muscle tone. Malaki receives weekly PT, OT, music therapy, and feeding therapy. He has shown incredible progress, but continues to be limited by his physical movement abilities.
One of our therapists introduced us to a family using Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for their child. After learning more, we decided to give it a try. Prior to entering the chamber, Malaki was unable to bend his legs while sitting, unable to crawl on hands and knees, struggled to lift arms above face level, and often kept hands and toes curled when moving. After only two sessions of HBOT, Malaki is able to sit independently with legs bent, has crawled roughly 2 feet on hands and knees, is beginning to feed himself with utensils, and is much more receptive to his stretching and strength building therapy routines. We have also noticed better coordination between his eyes, and an increase in cognition, such as object permanence and the use of several words (dada, uh-oh, hi).
Because of Malaki's diagnosis, multiple therapy appointments, and significant number of doctors appointments, I have needed to stay at home and not return to work. While I absolutely love being a stay at home mom and am incredibly blessed to do so, it makes affording extra therapy very difficult. Insurance does not cover HBOT, and packages of 10 sessions (1 session a week for 10 weeks) are costing us $1,500 each. A minimum of 40-50 consecutive sessions are recommended to see full benefits for Malaki, and then maintenance sessions (minimum of 1-2 a month) will be needed for Malaki to continue to have decreased tone and the ability to freely move his body.
After much research, we have determined that it would make financial sense to purchase our own HBOT chamber to keep in our home, instead of continuing to pay for sessions at a wellness center. This is a huge upfront cost, and we are asking for support in making this a possibility for us.
Having our own chamber would allow us to increase Malaki's HBOT sessions to twice weekly, and continue giving consistent sessions while he learns to stand, and hopefully, walk. We will then have the opportunity to provide maintenance sessions as often as we see necessary to maintain all the progress he has achieved.
Donations received will be used to purchase an in-home Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber to continue to improve Malaki's future. Any additional funds we receive that exceed the cost of the chamber will go towards maintenance and upkeep of the chamber. If we receive funds beyond this, we will use them towards additional therapies not covered by insurance, such as aquatic therapy, and outpatient therapies when he ages out of early intervention services.
Thank you each for your time, prayers, and consideration of donating towards this life-changing experience for Malaki! We are truly blessed beyond words and thank God each day for the people He has placed in our lives to make this possible.
