Hello everyone,

As some of you know, Makala was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Hearing those words turned her entire world, and ours upside down. This has been one of the hardest moments we have had to face, but if you know Makala, you know her strength, her warmth, her positivity, and the light she brings into every space she walks into. She is the kind of person who pours love into everyone around her, even on her hardest days. Makala always shows up for everyone around her and we would like to take the opportunity to have people show up for her.

Now she is preparing to start an intense treatment journey. During this time, she will be unable to work, which means she will have no income while facing some of the most overwhelming challenges of her life. As Makala goes on this journey she still has the responsibility of raising her young son and providing for him and herself. Cancer doesn’t pause the bills, the responsibilities, or the daily needs that keep life moving.

On top of this, Makala also hopes to preserve the possibility of having more children in the future. Because chemotherapy can significantly impact fertility, she is trying to pursue fertility preservation options before treatment begins. These procedures are extremely expensive and, unfortunately, not easily accessible in Alaska, often requiring travel and additional medical costs.
