Our Family Needs Help!
My best friend/sister Margaret Ross "Maggie" went into the hospital on September 12, 2024, with dizziness and fainting. We all thought it was something simple, maybe a kidney infection or just a simple virus. But while there for five days waiting on test results, she had a seizure and vomited with her jaws clenched shut. Due to the seizure, she aspirated her vomit (inhaled vomit back into her lungs). This set off a chain of events none of us were prepared for. She went into a coma and was put on life support on September 17, 2024.
We had to get a last-minute flight for her granddaughter Paige, whom Maggie and her husband Patrick had raised since birth, from New Jersey to Florida because the doctor gave us the news of a very slim chance of Maggie recovering, let alone surviving. When we went in to speak with him, he asked us to make life decisions on the spot! So she could be here with her Nanny (Maggie), Poppie (Patrick), and her little brother Jayden, who is 16 and has also been raised by Maggie and Patrick since birth. We arranged daily transportation because the car quit working. We used Uber, borrowed cars, and even as far as using Patrick's company box truck to be at the hospital every day with her.
With a lot of prayers and wonderful doctors and nurses, on October 7, 2024, twenty days later, she stabilized and was taken off life support with no muscle memory or control of her body or bodily functions. Two days before Hurricane Milton hit, when Hurricane Milton hit, we lost the roof of the house and power, losing all food. We moved to a new home and got a generator because of no power there either, but we don't want to lose the little food that we can get. Doctors now say she can come home in a few weeks after an inpatient rehab center, but she will need a wheelchair, stairlift, oxygen, wheelchair ramp, etc. The majority of which is not cheap and insurance doesn't cover. The new house has to be modified to fit her needs. Everything we have and had has been sunk into the move, transportation back and forth, and a generator plus gas because of no power at the new house. So we can continue with modifications and cleanup to have it ready for her to come home after rehab. Not to mention we have been fighting with her insurance company, who has been denying all options for her rehab and treatment because they say she doesn't need the physical rehabilitation even though they are not doctors. Meanwhile, she cannot walk, hold a cup, or tell when she has to go to the bathroom due to the muscle loss from being in a coma. Most, if not all, of her needs are going to have to come out of pocket. Patrick works long hours trying to make money to support his family, and we all help and chip in as much as possible, but it is not nearly enough to cover her needs.
We are fundraising to cover the costs of Maggie's medical needs and home modifications.
This fundraiser is for Margaret Ross "Maggie," who has been through a severe medical crisis and needs extensive support to recover and return home.
