Hello, my name is Kate Ugrich. I am Madi's sister-in-law.

Some may know a little of our roller coaster of feelings this summer. For those who don’t know or may not know the occurrences to the fullest extent, here is a quick summary of why we as a family are putting this out there.

Most know we lost our dad/stepdad/husband/father-in-law (Rick) suddenly this past July after battling cancer. During his battle, our mom/mother-in-law (Rose) was diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, fighting her battle with the terrible “C” word. She’s a fighter and has been doing great for the most part, but still has a long road ahead of her to fight it out of her body.

During her fight with cancer, Madi developed migraine-like symptoms two weeks ago for a few days that made her wind up in the hospital to find out what the issue may be. While in the hospital doing CT scans to her head, it was determined she has a tumor that has developed on the temporal lobe of her brain. She was ambulanced to St. Mary's Duluth on 10/16 due to blacking out. She is currently fighting the battle with this tumor and will undergo a craniotomy today, Thursday 10/24 morning, to remove it and have it biopsied for the terrible "C" word. We are unsure of what the turnaround time is for Madi until after surgery. She will be spending a few days at St. Mary’s Essentia Health in Duluth following her operation.

Since all of this, we have had to keep family and friends updated and accidentally skip over a few, which is one reason why we are starting this, to provide updates with this journey for anyone interested in following.
