Support Maddie Lane and Her New Hip

This campaign was created on behalf of Madeline Lane, written by her family and closest friends. The ultimate goal of this campaign is to raise money for Madeline to help alleviate some financial stress for her upcoming hip replacement surgery, so that she can continue to enjoy her new kidney and live a happy & healthy life. Many of you know her story, but in case you’ve made it to this GoFundMe page without knowing her story please read on. It is our pleasure to bring you along on her journey.

This biography has to be prefaced with the fact that we cannot include every detail of Madeline’s story in this GoFundMe campaign. If after you read this you are wanting to learn more about Madeline we encourage you to follow Madeline’s story on Facebook at Find Maddie A Kidney .

Let’s really bring you back. The story starts in 1995. Madeline was 7 years old, turning 8 in November. This was the year of her first diagnosis, Glomerulonephritis. Both of her kidneys were failing at the age of 7. It took 6 years for both her kidneys to completely fail, but in 2001 Madeline needed her first kidney transplant. On 01/18/2001, Madeline’s mother, Mary, gave her one of her kidneys. Madeline got her second chance at life and for 11 years, she was happy and healthy. In February 2012, at the age of 23 Madeline was given the news that her mom’s kidney was failing. Madeline began peritoneal dialysis in 2012 and for greater than 6 YEARS she would be waitlisted for another kidney. For 6 YEARS she would have to be confined and connected to a machine to filter her body of waste to make up for her failed kidneys. For 6 YEARS she had to put her life on hold because some days she just didn’t have it in her to put on a smile to mask her true emotions. For those 6 YEARS, Madeline would be in and out of jobs because she would be sick, too weak, or unable to dedicate the time needed to work due to the constraints of peritoneal dialysis. During those 6 years, in June 2012, Madeline had to be admitted to the hospital for a Pulmonary Embolism. In those years, there were days of optimism and there were days of severe pessimism. Did you know the average life expectancy of someone on peritoneal dialysis is 5 years? Just a side note. After 6 YEARS and 3 MONTHS, Madeline received the call that there was a deceased donor in the UW-Madison area that was a match for her kidney, and on 10/21/2018 Madeline received her 2nd successful kidney transplant. This is not where the story ends. In January 2019, her wounds from the transplant got infected and she was admitted to the hospital where she was given a wound vac to clean up the incision. In September 2020, Madeline fractured her foot. These are the negative side effects on bone density from steroid use since she was 7 years old. Later in September 2020, Madeline had another surgery to remove her parathyroids (parathyroidectomy) because they were overactive as a result of the most recent kidney transplant. Which brings us to current day, and hence the reason for this GoFundMe campaign. The days leading up to 10/27/2020, Madeline began experiencing hip pain, initially assumed to be muscular. On the 27th, the pain in her hip became unbearable. Madeline was diagnosed with avascular necrosis, degeneration of the head of the femur bone that sits in the socket of her left hip. Once again this was caused by extended steroid use. Ironic that a drug that helps her kidney is also the drug that is killing her bones.

There is no way around it, Madeline needs a hip replacement at the age of 33. The surgery was initially scheduled for December 2020, but due to COVID numbers increasing and Madeline’s surgery being classified as “elective,” there is no date scheduled as of right now. Madeline has not been able to work since October and the recovery time for the hip replacement is 8 weeks post operation. Madeline has Medicare, but she lost her secondary insurance when she was unable to return to work in October. Medicare covers 80% of all “kidney related” expenses and Madeline is responsible for the remaining 20%. Anything Medicare considers non-kidney related will be Madeline’s responsibility to cover at 100%, which includes some medications that she is required to take. The ugly truth is that this is just the beginning. Madeline has been cleared by her doctors to return to work on light duty, but the ultimate decision on whether she can return to work comes down to her employer. Even if her employer allows her to return to work, Madeline would have to accumulate enough hours to maintain full-time status in order to get secondary insurance. That’s full time hours with an already fractured hip. Madeline is looking into secondary insurance from outside her employer, but that comes at a price as well, with monthly premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses. In addition to medical expenses, Madeline will have to juggle her mortgage, car payment, and living expenses. The money you graciously donate will help to support Madeline with the cost of her hip replacement at UW Madison, the cost of secondary insurance (right now it looks like COBRA will be the best option at somewhere around $772/month), the out-of-pocket expenses (remaining 20% not covered by secondary insurance), her daily medications, and assistance with her monthly mortgage, car payment, and living expenses. This campaign will also help down the road when Madeline has to have her other hip replaced, which according to the doctors at UW Madison is inevitable. We take pride in saying that we have made it this far with the financial support of family and friends through fundraisers and kidney transplant awareness parties. This is our first attempt at a GoFundMe campaign. We are going outside our comfort zone and entrusting all of you in our most vulnerable time. We genuinely appreciate your consideration.

Thank you for listening to Madeline’s story. It is difficult to ask for anything from anyone, especially financial support. Madeline would’ve never made this GoFundMe for herself, but it has come to the point that we (as her family) have to put aside our facade and ask for your help. We understand that 2020 has been taxing on everyone either physically, emotionally, or financially in one way or another. This campaign comes at a difficult time for a lot of people as we approach the holidays. There are many generous people in this world, and we understand that you cannot give to everyone or every cause. We humbly ask that if you cannot donate at this time, please consider donating next time. Thank you.

With Love,
Madeline Lane’s Family
