Lynn Lertzman had dementia, and was moved into a skilled nursing home in Portland in 2023. Following her stroke, her daughter Renee temporarily relocated to oversee her care and attend to her needs. Costs and tolls of of caregiving can be very taxing for family. The skilled nursing home was a challenging environment for Lynn. It can be lonely, isolating and disorienting. Thankfully, her basic physical needs (room/board) was covered by Medicaid, but this did not include Adult Day Services and additional resources to help her feel less isolated and alone, and live with dignity.
