Support Luz "Cookie" in Her Fight Against Cancer

Dear Cherished Community:

We, members of Luz Marquez-Benbow’s (also known as “Cuqui” or “Cookie”) family defined by blood and spirit, are requesting support for a beloved mother, wife, sister, cousin, friend, mentor, colleague, and comrade on her healing journey.

People who know Luz know that she is a giver and caretaker. She is someone who gives to her family and her communities. She is a trailblazing Black Latine survivor-leader-activist (Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault, New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Just Beginnings Collaborative, I AM NEGRX, Troy 4 Black Lives) who has dedicated nearly her entire adult life to advocating tirelessly for survivors of sexual and state sanctioned violence in the halls of local, state and federal governments and also in the grassroots community streets for survivors of sexual and state-sanctioned violence.

Now, Cookie is in what may be her biggest battle to date–a fight for her life. Over the summer, Luz was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. As most know, if not one can imagine, colorectal cancer treatment is invasive and overwhelming. For many survivors like Luz, the treatment is not only physical but also profoundly emotional precisely because of her childhood sexual abuse herstory.

Tragically, several medical personnel and the healthcare system overall have repeatedly failed to address the specific needs that are a direct result of Cookie’s childhood survivor herstory. They want to treat the dis-ease without looking at the patient in totality. Oftentimes, these invasive tests and subsequent treatments, which are hard for most people regardless of survivor status, result in Luz feeling vulnerable and frequently retraumatized during her care. She is unable to take her prescribed medications for anxiety and PTSD during chemotherapy because they interfere with her treatments. All of this means that Cookie continuously faces the most challenging moments of this journey without the prescribed ability to calm down and manage the triggers that overwhelm her.

Even while fighting for her life, Luz is steadfast in her commitment to demand facilities create survivor-centered protocols, including a trusted advocate in the room for invasive tests and procedures, even the ones considered “minor.” Essentially, she is advocating for survivors who may receive a similar diagnosis. At the same time, Luz struggles to ask for and receive support like many of us. This fundraiser is one way to show her that she is not alone in this fight and that we have her back in this journey.

With the changing environment in healthcare, even when one has health insurance, more responsibility for payment is being placed on the patient in the form of copays and deductibles. We are requesting financial support to not only cover the extensive medical costs that aren’t covered by health insurance but also to provide Cookie with alternative remedies that will support her healing journey without interfering with her treatment, and to provide Cookie’s caregivers with assistance needed to care for her and themselves during this time. These funds will help pay for various holistic therapies and somatic treatments that can provide relief, including costs that have already been incurred.

Every contribution, regardless of the amount, helps Luz/Cookie/Cuqui fight this battle while maintaining her dignity and peace of mind.

Quieren tratar la enfermedad sin considerar al paciente en su totalidad. A menudo, estas pruebas invasivas y los tratamientos subsecuentes, que son difíciles para la mayoría de las personas sin importar si son sobrevivientes, hacen que Luz se sienta vulnerable y frecuentemente revictimizada durante su atención. No puede tomar sus medicamentos recetados para la ansiedad y el trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT) durante la quimioterapia, ya que interfieren con su tratamiento.
