Help Support Luke Ogburn’s Road to Recovery
On the Friday of Graduation Weekend—a time that should have been full of celebration—I called our Bagel Cafe to check in. It was supposed to be our new manager’s first graduation weekend at the cafe. But instead of discussing the usual business, he told me something that took my breath away: the police had just left. They had come to ask him to identify a young man who had tragically fallen from the cliffs. That young man was Luke Ogburn—one of our beloved employees, a kind soul, and a member of our Bagel Cafe family.
Our manager was calling Luke’s phone and the police picked up. This why they came to see him to make the identification. What followed was a nightmare no family or friend should ever have to face. Luke was rushed to the ICU, unconscious and critically injured.
His injuries were devastating:
• Both lungs collapsed, requiring emergency breathing support
• His entire body swelled with air trapped under his skin due to subcutaneous emphysema
• He suffered a fractured pelvis, clavicle, and multiple facial and orbital fractures
• A broken rib
• Deep lacerations across his head and body
And yet—miraculously—Luke survived. He is still with us, and he is going to recover. But the journey ahead is long. He will need more care, extensive rehabilitation, and months of healing.
Luke is more than just an employee—he’s a vibrant, thoughtful, hardworking young man who brought positivity and kindness to every shift. The outpouring of love from our staff, our customers, and our community has been powerful, and we’re holding onto that hope as he begins this long climb back.
As you can imagine, the financial burden from such a catastrophic injury is overwhelming. That’s why we’ve started this GoFundMe page to support Luke and his family during this incredibly difficult time.
In addition, we’re hosting a fundraiser at Bagel Cafe on Wednesday, July 9th, where 50% of all sales will be donated directly to Luke’s recovery fund.
This experience has shaken all of us. But it’s also reminded us to tell those around us that we love them. To be present. To offer a hug. To not take a single day for granted.
Luke, we are thinking of you. We believe in your strength. And we can’t wait to welcome you back—when you’re ready—with open arms.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for caring.
