A narrative short film that spreads awareness about oil extraction in the Ecuadorian Amazon, which affects not only this incredibly diverse ecosystem, but also the indigenous communities that depend upon it to continue their ancestral way of life.
ABOUT THE FILM
Rio Negro is a SCAD capstone thesis short film being shot in the Ecuadorian Amazon in March 2026. This thesis film is directed by Luke Cooper Escobar and produced by Cristina González Toscanini, both Ecuadorian SCAD Bees.
FILM SYNOPSIS
When his father falls gravely ill, Yaku, a young Kichwa man, seeks help from his estranged uncle, only to find himself drawn into the same oil company that is destroying his homeland, forcing him to choose between his heritage, the soul of his people, and saving his father.
WHY THIS STORY
Luke's connection with the Ecuadorian Amazon
My whole life, I grew up surrounded by all these environmental problems, while deeply connected to rural people and nature, and understanding how different cultures perceive our species' existence on the planet and our place in the universe. I was fortunate enough to travel to the Amazon and live with indigenous communities, going places where very few human beings have been. I even documented species that have recently been discovered, or animals so rare that not even the scientists investigating them have had the opportunity to witness.
I grew up in a family that has always been working on the conservation of Ecuador’s incredible diversity. My father came here to help form a 21,000 acre nature reserve, and also became one of the most renowned bird photographers in the Neotropics - as a way to help conserve these species and ecosystems through images. With this also came a connection to the dozens of ethnic groups in my homeland, Ecuador, and their intricate connection with their environment, and more importantly, their response to the complex and powerful sociocultural forces of globalization.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
The purpose of this film is to bring awareness to the environmental issues present in the Amazon every day, of which the oil industry is a major contributor: between 1995 and 2011 alone, at least 1,983 oil spills were recorded, representing more than 125,000 barrels. That’s equivalent to one oil spill EVERY 3 DAYS, for 17 years straight.
This film exposes the true impacts of the oil industry on the Amazon rainforest, and on the communities that have co-existed in harmony with this forest for millennia.
THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERNATIONAL STORIES
The production team for Rio Negro is made up of many international students from various Latin American countries. By supporting this film, you are supporting the ability for these students to retain their visas and continue to tell important stories like this through the art of film. As emerging filmmakers, we will have the opportunity to be seen on the world stage, representing unique and diverse stories that deserve (and desperately need) to be told.
FINANCING BREAKDOWN - Our budget is $20,000
Your donations will help us bring our film to life by funding our production costs and festival fees. Our cast and crew of 25+ will shoot for a week in the Amazon to bring this incredible story to life. We will then release the film to as many festivals as possible, in an effort to expose this story to as wide an audience as possible. We most need the help with transportation to and from the Amazon, accommodations for our cast and crew in Ecuador, and catering to support our cast and crew for all their hard work!

Río Negro es un proyecto de ficción audiovisual, como parte del proceso de tesis final de SCAD, que se filmará en la Amazonía ecuatoriana en marzo de 2026. Este cortometraje de tesis está dirigido por Luke Cooper Escobar y producido por Cristina González Toscanini, ambos estudiantes ecuatorianos becados en SCAD.
SOBRE LA PELÍCULA
Río Negro es un cortometraje narrativo que busca mostrar, en la Amazonía ecuatoriana, los estragos que sufrió la comunidad Kichwa en los años 90, durante las extracciones de petróleo.
SINOPSIS DE LA PELÍCULA
Cuando el padre de Yaku, un joven Kichwa, enferma gravemente, busca la ayuda de su tío, quien se ha distanciado de él, solo para verse involucrado en la misma compañía petrolera que, sin saberlo, le está causando la enfermedad.
¿POR QUÉ ESTA HISTORIA?
La conexión de Luke con la Amazonía ecuatoriana.
Crecí rodeado de todos estos problemas ambientales, profundamente conectado con la gente rural y la naturaleza, y comprendiendo cómo las diferentes culturas perciben la existencia de nuestra especie en el planeta y nuestro lugar en el universo. Tuve la fortuna de viajar a la Amazonía y convivir con comunidades indígenas, visitando lugares donde muy pocos seres humanos han estado. Incluso documenté especies recientemente descubiertas, o animales tan raros que ni siquiera los científicos que los investigan han tenido la oportunidad de presenciar.
Crecí en una familia que siempre ha trabajado por la conservación de la increíble diversidad de Ecuador. Mi padre vino aquí para ayudar a crear una reserva natural de 8.500 hectáreas y también se convirtió en uno de los fotógrafos de aves más reconocidos del Neotrópico, como una forma de contribuir a la conservación de estas especies y ecosistemas a través de sus imágenes. Esto también me conectó con las decenas de grupos étnicos de mi tierra natal, Ecuador, y su intrincada conexión con su entorno, y, aún más importante, su respuesta a las complejas y poderosas fuerzas socioculturales de la globalización.
CONCIENCIA AMBIENTAL
El propósito de esta película es concientizar sobre los problemas ambientales que a diario afectan a la Amazonía, de los cuales la industria petrolera es un importante contribuyente: solo entre 1995 y 2011, se registraron al menos 1983 derrames de petróleo, lo que representa más de 125 000 barriles. Esto equivale a un derrame de petróleo CADA 3 DÍAS, durante 17 años consecutivos.
Esta película expone el verdadero impacto de la industria petrolera en la selva amazónica y en las comunidades que han coexistido en armonía con este bosque durante milenios.
LA IMPORTANCIA DE LAS HISTORIAS INTERNACIONALES
El equipo de producción de Río Negro está formado por 25 personas, entre estudiantes internacionales de SCAD de diversos países latinoamericanos, talento y profesionales ecuatorianos. Al apoyar esta película, estás apoyando la posibilidad de que estos estudiantes conserven sus visas y continúen contando historias importantes como esta a través del cine. Como cineastas emergentes, tendremos la oportunidad de ser vistos a nivel mundial, representando historias únicas y diversas que merecen (y necesitan desesperadamente) ser contadas.
