This past week, my incredible boyfriend Luis Bonilla was suddenly diagnosed with cancer: acute promyelocytic leukemia to be exact (APL or APML for short). The past few days have been a terrifying whirlwind of tests and anxiety. You just don’t expect a healthy person in his 20s to rapidly develop cancer, and it has been a total shock to Luis and his loved ones. Luckily, his doctors have assured him that while this is a rare and aggressive form of leukemia, it is highly treatable!

The treatment requires that Luis stay at the hospital for a full month. Once he is discharged, he will get outpatient chemotherapy treatment for five days every month until he is cancer-free.

Luis has recently been working long days at two part-time jobs. However, even though he had a full work schedule, he does not qualify for paid medical leave due to his part-time status at both jobs. So he will not have any income from this past week, or the next month in the hospital. The outpatient treatment schedule will also make it difficult to maintain his jobs, not to mention being immunocompromised and tired from chemotherapy.

Luis is staying strong and optimistic, but he could really use your support. The dollar amount of this fundraiser represents five week’s worth of pay at only ONE of his part-time jobs. Luis is a wonderful person who genuinely loves making people laugh and getting to know them. If you’ve ever worked with him, you know this!
