Luis Chirinos Gonzalez is a Venezuelan TPS (Temporary Protected Status) holder living on Long Island. He came to the U.S. to flee political persecution. Unfortunately, the Trump administration revoked TPS status for Venezuela in 2025, rendering hundreds of thousands of TPS holders like Luis undocumented with the stroke of a pen.
In June 2025, Luis was detained by ICE while on his way home from his job as a construction worker in the Bronx. His wife was 4 months pregnant at the time. While he was detained, his wife struggled with a high-risk pregnancy and lost her housing. Luis remained in ICE custody in Texas until October 3rd, when he was released with an ankle monitor. Once reunited, he and his wife were able to secure an apartment and welcomed their first child, a boy, into their lives in December. He regularly attended his immigration appointments.
On January 4, 2026, Luis was again detained, this time by the police, after he left a store where he had just bought baby formula for his newborn son. The police turned him over to ICE, even though he explained that his family desperately needed him. He is now in a California detention center, far from his family. Luis, his wife, and their baby are in dire need of financial assistance right now. They desperately need help with rent and with legal expenses, as well as with the costs of basic essentials, such as diapers, formula, food and phone calls from detention. Your help can make a world of difference to this family. Thank you for your generosity.
