Jason and Melissa’s world came crashing down Thursday (June 13). What started as a fun day as a family turned into a 911 call when Luca developed a mild fever that spiked to 104, causing a 3-minute seizure on the couch in their new home.
They were transported to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where it was initially thought to be a febrile seizure. Thankfully, the great doctors at Hoag conducted some blood work and determined something was very off with Luca’s white and red blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin levels. They then transported the family to CHOC Hospital, where further tests revealed that their sweet, healthy, strong 2-year-old had leukemia.
There was concern about Luca’s brain due to the seizure and subsequent nose bleeds, so a CT scan was performed immediately at CHOC. Thankfully, no cancer was found in his brain. Praise God!
After more tests, Luca was diagnosed with B-Lymphoblastic leukemia—an aggressive (fast-growing) type of leukemia (blood cancer) in which too many B-cell lymphoblasts (immature white blood cells) are found in the bone marrow and blood. The good news is that this type of leukemia is the most common and also very curable.
There were absolutely no signs of Luca being sick before the seizure. If you know Luca, he is always smiling, always eating, laughing, and has the most perfect natural tan from his olive skin. Doctors reassured Jason and Melissa that there was no way they could have caught this earlier; the only sign was the seizure. Because it’s a very aggressive and fast-growing type of leukemia, it could have only been weeks that it had been growing in his body, not months.
As we all know, there are a lot of unknowns for the Jacobi family. It’s going to be a long journey of treatments and settling into their new normal with Luca and Jaxon. Melissa is also due with baby boy #3 in a few months (September 26), so that will also come their way as they are managing Luca’s cancer treatments. They also learned yesterday that even when Luca finishes his cancer treatments, he will still have to return for maintenance treatments for the next 2-3 years.
We have had so many people reach out to us and Melissa/Jason about supporting their family during this time. As you can imagine, treatment and medical expenses are incredibly expensive. To help ease the load for the Jacobi family, if you feel led, please donate to Luca's journey for overcoming leukemia. All donations will be paid towards Luca's medical expenses. The Jacobi family will post updates on his journey on this page as well as on their Instagram accounts: @melisjacobi and @jrjacobi.
If you want to support with food/gift cards - you can visit the meal train here.
Here are some ways you can be praying for the Jacobi family:
- Prayers for Luca and his cancer treatments.
- Big brother Jaxon and his heart during all these changes.
- Melissa and baby boy #3, that they both stay healthy and rested.
- Jason and Melissa as they navigate this new normal as a family, juggling the kids, work, and all the obstacles that might come their way.
We serve a big God that moves mountains and has literally healed the blind, raised the dead, and made the sick healthy. We have total faith that God has big plans for Luca and he will overcome this diagnosis. Thank you for your support!
