Dave versus the Brain Infection
[Dramatic movie announcer voice]: In a world turned upside down...one man fights for survival - and one really awesome woman refuses to leave his side! -

(Our attempt at bringing a little levity to a very serious chapter of our lives.)

The short version

Dave is recovering from a brain infection. We are raising funds to attend (and help others attend) a week-long retreat for brain injury survivors and caregivers this May. If you’re able to help, we are deeply grateful.

Our Story

In early hours of September 1, 2024, Dave woke up paralyzed on his left side. What we thought might be a stroke turned out to be a brain abscess - a rare pocket of infection in his brain.

Before doctors could fully control it, the abscess ruptured and spread throughout Dave's brain. His risk of dying skyrocketed. We were told to prepare for the worst.

After multiple brain surgeries, weeks in the ICU, and an arsenal of antibiotics, Dave survived.

He spent a month in the hospital and weeks in rehab. He began his recovery in a wheelchair, unable to move his left side. Over the last year he has fought his way back - he learned how to walk again, he returned to work at Maine Veterans' Homes, and he continues specialized neuro focused physical therapy.

While Dave has made amazing strides (pun intended), walking is still a challenge as his left leg remains weak and uncooperative. Imagine if you had to think about walking - about lifting your knee up and putting your foot down for every step you take. That’s what it’s like for Dave.

We are forever grateful for the friends, family, and neighbors who carried us through the most difficult time in our lives. The universe blessed us with a phenomenal support system.

Still, brain injury can feel isolating. That’s why we are raising money to attend the Love Your Brain retreat in Maine this May. This retreat is a dedicated space for brain injury survivors and caregivers to connect, learn, and heal alongside others who are on similar journeys.

If you feel moved to help, please consider donating today. This retreat is an important step in our ongoing recovery, and your support will directly help us get there. If you can’t donate, sharing this page means just as much.

Thank you for standing with us. We truly couldn’t do this alone.

Lots of Love,

Trish & Dave...

...and also Bella :)
