Several weeks ago, Lou and Marie woke up like they did any other day at “home” in Mississippi. By nightfall, likely sooner, it had been decided they were no longer wanted and were consciously put in a garbage bag that was tied shut. They were then driven to a gas station and that garbage bag was thrown from the car toward a dumpster. A gentleman, walking into a store late at night, saw the individual throw the bag. When he came out of the store, he saw the bag moving and he ripped it open. He immediately called Tunica HumaneSociety. God bless Sandy Williams for answering that call so late at night and may that man who saw something and did something, have a life filled with blessings.
In that garbage bag was a frail little old man with limited sight and a much younger companion, who was clearly overbred. Lou and Marie. Instead of ending their lives, as that cruel and horrific act intended, a new journey began. Several weeks ago, they traveled to their forever home with us in New York.
Their needs have been neglected their entire lives. Yesterday they saw the vet.
Lou’s vet visit, from head to tail.
Their vet doesn’t believe Lou has cataracts. She thinks his “cloudy” condition is from having dry eye, which will now be treated with Optimmune twice a day for the rest of his life. He has four rotted teeth and all four have exposed roots. Those will be extracted soon. Both ears are severely infected and he received Claro treatments in both. His fur loss is likely due to having had fleas, but he also has a fungal infection and will be getting medicated baths until it clears up. He has bilateral luxating patellas and was prescribed Deramaxx (an anti-inflammatory and pain med) and also Dasuquin. As we know, Lou was very underweight when found. Since he arrived “home,” I have monitored his food intake. He should be putting on weight, but instead he lost weight. Ran bloodwork and I should have those results by Monday at the latest. The loss of weight, knowing what his food intake is, is very concerning to me. Lastly (for now), as we know he’s a Cryptoid with only one testicle descended. Lou is tentatively scheduled for a neuter and teeth extraction on December 12th.
Marie’s vet visit from head to tail.
Overall, Marie’s teeth don’t look too bad, but she has a lot of tartar on her back teeth. None are loose. She will get a cleaning and no extractions are expected. She has a bacterial infection on her skin and will be treated with medicated baths. Marie does have a mammary tumor. I felt swelling last week and could feel the mass within the swelling. They ran cytology and are 99.9% confident it is cancerous. Pre-op bloodwork and Xrays were done and she is scheduled for a spay and “lumpectomy,” as well as her teeth cleaning on December 12th. If the mass grows significantly, prior to the 12th, they’ll work her into the schedule sooner.
Yesterday’s vet appointment which was $1105.70. Their upcoming medical is estimated at approximately $3300. While Tunica would like to pay for their medical, I am struggling with taking funds from them. (I wish we could easily absorb the cost, but you know all the ongoing medical needs with our many senior/hospice/special needs pups in our home.) Tunica has dozens and dozens of puppies that need full vetting. They have older dogs in their shelter who need more vetting as they age. They have significant debt with the medical Champ received at Mississippi State. We are asking, if you are able, to please donate to Lou and Marie’s vetting. Any funds raised over what is needed for them, will go directly to Tunica to help pay for their dogs needing medical.
Thank you!
