Hello, my name is Cary. As you know, sometimes life can throw you an unexpected circumstance. Well, that is what happened to our family on Monday, 1/21 of this year. This is why I’m creating this page on behalf of my wife, Lori, and our family.
In the early morning of 1/21 she fell down into our bedroom dresser and banged her ribs. I took her to our primary care MD later that morning. The doctor took a chest X-ray which showed 2 fractured ribs and 1 displaced rib. We were told to go home and rest for a few weeks and do pain management since “the hospital can’t really do much for rib fractures.” I stayed home with her for the week from work as she was in a lot of pain.
On Friday, 1/24 she had a hard time breathing and walking too much and spiked a fever of 101-102. We went to the ER that day; they performed a CT of the abdomen and pelvis which actually showed 4 broken ribs (ribs 6, 7, 8, & 9) with a possible liver laceration. She had to be transferred to a trauma hospital ER here in Raleigh by Critical Care Transport Ambulance. We were then met by the trauma team and one of the surgeons who recommended surgery due to multiple rib fractures/breaks and possible liver laceration. She was quickly scheduled for surgery the next morning.
During the 4 1/2 hour surgery, they placed metal plates on two of the ribs while also repairing a liver laceration and a lacerated diaphragm (which we did not know about until surgery). Lori was then placed on a telemetry floor with a chest tube for the next 13 days to be monitored due to her history of atrial fibrillation. She is home recovering now for the next 6-12 weeks. Thankfully, she made it through the roughest part, but there is a long road ahead and also a lot of unexpected medical expenses. If you feel in your heart led to give to help, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Even if you can't give, would you consider sharing? Either way, we are grateful for you and your prayers.
God Bless,
Cary & Lori
