Hello, we’re Evan and Mia, but this isn’t really about us. It’s about our sweet boy, Loki.
What Happened:
Over the past few weeks, we started noticing small changes in Loki. He wasn’t quite his usual playful, social, energetic self. Then we noticed something that truly scared us, more than a liter of fluid building up in his abdomen.
We rushed him to the vet, hoping it would be something simple. Instead, we began what has turned into a series of frightening and expensive appointments. The first visit cost $600 just for a basic evaluation, with a few answers. Desperate for clarity, we sought out another vet. That’s when things became more serious.
They extracted a pink fluid from Loki’s abdomen, which is something that should not be there. We were told it could indicate heart failure… or cancer. Hearing those words about our 8-year-old cat shattered us.
X-rays have been done. Bloodwork has been run. An ultrasound is next, so the doctors can try to understand what they’re seeing. His case has been described as “unique” and “extremely rare" by the veterinarians. While that may be medically fascinating, as his parents, it is terrifying.
The bills are coming in faster than we can manage. The ultrasound alone has nearly drained us, and there are still more tests and surgery ahead.
Why We’re Asking for Help:
We are not people who ask for assistance lightly. In fact, this is one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do.
Mia is working full-time, pouring everything she has into supporting our family. I am currently completing my Master’s degree in Teaching Secondary Social Studies, which requires full-time internships and coursework that leave little room for outside employment. We have been doing everything we can to stay afloat, but after these emergency vet visits, our savings are gone. Right now, we are down to covering only the absolute essentials.
Loki is not “just a cat.” He is our emotional support animal. He has been our comfort during long nights of studying, stressful work weeks, and life’s hardest moments. Mia and I have had him since he was a kitten, and he has grown into the most loving, affectionate soul. He greets everyone like they’re his best friend. He curls up beside us when we’re overwhelmed. He has an unmatched ability to make a room feel warmer just by being in it.
A few months ago, we adopted another local farm kitty, Lenny, because Loki was depressed and overslept, leading to abnormal weight gain. Watching their bond grow has been one of the sweetest things we’ve ever experienced. They play together, nap together, and keep each other company when we’re at work or school. Loki still has so much life, love, and companionship left to give.
He is only eight years old. He should have many healthy years ahead of him.
What Your Support Would Do:
The funds raised will go directly toward:
- The ultrasound and specialist diagnostics
- Ongoing bloodwork and X-rays
- Surgery and/or treatment, depending on the diagnosis
Paying off the emergency visits that have already exhausted our savings. Beyond the financial help, your support gives us something just as important: hope. It gives us the ability to focus on Loki’s healing instead of constant panic over how we will afford the next test.
From Our Hearts:
We have seen enough illness and hardship in our extended family already. Facing the possibility of cancer again, this time in our sweet boy, feels overwhelming.
We have exhausted our bank accounts and have spent over $2000 already without any treatment. If you are able to donate, share, or simply send kind thoughts, we are deeply grateful. Every bit of support brings us closer to answers and to giving Loki the fighting chance he deserves.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for standing with us during one of the most stressful moments of our lives.
With gratitude and love,
Mia, Evan, and Loki
