Hi, my name is Makaeyla, and I am starting this GoFundMe for my 21-year-old cousin, Logan Kiel.
At the end of July and beginning of August, Logan began having trouble sleeping comfortably and felt a lot of pressure and mild pain on his right side. His mom brought him to the doctor, thinking it was likely a kidney stone. The doctor ordered a CT scan, which revealed a large mass on his right kidney as well as spots on his lungs.
After extensive testing, including a lung biopsy that was inconclusive and ultimately a kidney biopsy, Logan was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms Tumor on September 8th. Wilms Tumor is a rare type of pediatric kidney cancer. The tumor has invaded the whole right kidney and his inferior vena cava. It is about 5 or 6 cm away from his heart.
He will receive chemotherapy for six weeks to help shrink the tumor. We are hoping it will shrink all the way back so that it is just in the kidney. Logan has already had a port placed for easier access during chemotherapy. After six weeks of chemo, he will undergo a very invasive surgery that is estimated to last about 10 hours. The doctors will remove the affected kidney and repair or reconstruct the vena cava depending how much the tumor has shrunk. Once he has recovered from surgery, Logan will do eight days of proton radiation to his lungs and abdomen where the tumorous kidney was removed and continue chemotherapy to ensure all cancer is gone. He will have to continue chemotherapy thru May of 2026.
Logan has an incredible team of doctors and is receiving treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, which is a two-hour and twenty-minute drive from his home in New Germany, MN. With frequent appointments, treatments, surgery, travel, and hotel stays when day trips aren’t possible, expenses will add up quickly.
Logan is a born athlete and has been heavily involved in sports throughout his life. He was a decathlete while attending St. John’s University before transferring to Minnesota State University, Mankato to pursue his dream of becoming a pilot. He joined Phi Kappa Psi fraternity while attending Mankato. Due to his diagnosis and treatment plan, Logan has had to scale back from college, put his pilot dream on hold, and pause his role as an assistant track coach at Mankato to focus on his health. He is currently taking two online classes to keep moving forward toward his degree.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Logan is one of the most kind-hearted and genuine people you will ever meet. He is hilarious, endlessly supportive of his family and friends, and always shows up for the people he loves. At just 21 years old, he already has such a strong head on his shoulders, giving back to his community, staying active in the lives of those he cares about, and making sure no one ever feels alone.
As treatments and surgery continue, expenses will quickly grow—medical bills, travel costs, and time away from work and school. I created this GoFundMe to help my aunt and uncle, Patrick and Lynette, give their son the best care possible and ease the financial burden that will continue to build over the next year.
If you are able to donate, our family
would be incredibly grateful. If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please keep Logan in your prayers and share this fundraiser if you can. Every bit of support, whether it’s donating, praying, or simply checking in, means more than we can put into words.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
With love Logan’s family and friends.
You’ve got this, Logan.
You are not standing alone. ❤️
