This cat (that we decided to name Lloyd) dragged himself into our front yard to hide. He was yelling repeatedly, and when approached did not hiss or show any aggression but continued yelling. When we tried to see what was wrong, he moved away from us and we could see that his back legs weren't working and he was dragging them behind him (just walking with his front).

After about a half hour of trying to get him with the help of a stranger (now a friend!), we were able to take him to Corona Animal Emergency Center, recommended to us by another rescue. There, he got an initial x-ray and some pain medicine. We were able to see quickly his back leg is badly fractured. The vet also noted a bad wound at the base of the tail, a scraped chin, and scraped genital area; it looks as though he was hit by a car.

We transferred him to Irvine Valley Veterinary Hospital where we have some pre-approved payment plans available, and continued treatment there. He's been hospitalized for 48 hours. Our focus has been on ensuring he's going to be stable and making sure he's going to have quality of life if we continue medical treatments.

He came in with a PCV of 33% and it decreased fairly quickly to 18.1%, but it has now plateau'ed at 21%. Originally they were thinking he might need a blood transfusion as a result of the sudden drop (and suspected internal bleeding), but this is not a concern any longer at this time. He was presenting a lot of blood in his urine originally, but it is now clear. He also was both in shock and had a critical blood pressure when he first came in, but is consistently testing now with a fully stabilized blood pressure of 150. His white blood cell count originally tested at 31,000 and is now much better at 20,000.

He had to have a catheter inserted for a little while to give his bladder a break as there is some damage to one of the walls of the bladder, but beyond that there is no observed internal damage (based on multiple ultrasounds looking for fluid pools). At this point, the catheter has been removed (as of 10 PM, Mar 6) to observe for the next 12-24 hours if he can urinate on his own or if he would need continued support with a catheter in order to function.

He is showing nerve damage in the tail and anus, as there is no feeling or constriction during activities like taking his temperature, and the vet is unable to say whether it is temporary or permanent. It is entirely possible it will heal with time, but this is one of the things we're waiting to see.

The next 12-24 hours will show whether he will have quality of life if given continued medical care. If he will, he'll need to have his leg amputated at minimum, and possibly will need to have his tail amputated as well to help remove excess weight if feeling does not return. He might need to wear diapers, but we have medical fosters able to take him in and care for him in this way.

This boy, during the car ride to the hospital, was purring when pet and playing with our fingers when we interacted with him. The hospital staff love him and report that he is a happy, bright boy who purrs often and "annihilates" his food & treats. We see this and the stabilized values for his blood pressure, PCV, and white blood cell count as signs that he's a fighter and wants to live. If we can do this in a manner that protects his quality of life, we'll do everything we can. But any help would go a long way towards ensuring we can not only help him but continue to help others.

We've spent $5,670.69 so far which will cover his hospitalization through 1 PM today, Mar. 7th, and thanks to a personal loan we have some additional funding to continue his care. But all of this is still an active debt (on top of thousands of medical debt sitting on our credit over the last year) that prevents us from taking in additional animals and being prepared to help others currently in our care. We are 501(c)3 status pending and are a small rescue, but we still have over 60 animals managed by our rescue who have been pulled from all manner of situations.

So far, we've raised a total of $550. This is more than we've managed to raise for any other animal in the rescue so far, and we are incredibly grateful. But we're still in an astronomical amount of debt - easily over $20k sits on our credit from the last year's worth of medical and rescue bills, and we are in over our heads. We had a choice to humanely euthanize him or try for him, and it just doesn't seem like we have the right to tell him he doesn't have a choice to try to live simply because we are in debt. Especially when he's showing such a will to live.

So we're asking for help from our community. Every dollar will go towards us closing out these debts so we have funds available for future emergencies. It all helps us keep our doors open for those who need our help. And it is all incredibly appreciated. We're here to help animals, and that is what we'll do for as long as we can.

Our website is incredibly in need of an update, but you can learn more about our rescue at https://tworabbitrescue.org.

More up-to-date information can be found on our social media platforms, which can be found on our website and on our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/2rabbitrescue

Please share to help this be found by those who can help!

P.S. He is not microchipped, and although we found someone who might be the owner, it does not look like he is theirs. So we are still looking for his owner (if there is anyone).
