Lizzy Arnold is taking her original, devised physical theatre show to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September 2025. Lizzy originally created this theatrical piece for the Student-Directed New Works Series for Coastal Carolina University’s Theatre Department during the 2023-2024 academic year, and she is excited to take it to a larger audience at the Philly Fringe. The show is based on the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion, who longed for the perfect woman. Unsatisfied by the women in his community, he sculpted his ideal from pure white marble. He fell in love with his perfect creation and named her Galatea. Galatea was granted life by the gods and became Pygmalion's wife. This play explores Galatea's reality as she grows in her womanhood and independence, gradually realizing she has a will of her own and finds allies among the women Pygmalion disdains.
The funds raised for this show will cover costs for costumes, props, travel, lodging, rental, and advertising. There are 10 actors as well as a small tech crew of 2 traveling to Gainesville, Florida for a preview at the Hippodrome State Theatre and to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September 2025.
