My name is Liz Boyd, and I am a student at Central Methodist University hoping to race at Open Jar Institute this summer.
Theatre found me when I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast in 6th grade. As a young girl with little confidence, I figured the best role I could book was the Beast! Fortunately for my developing vocal cords, I was cast as Belle. I begged my parents for vocal lessons, sacrificing club soccer in the process, and began to work. What started as a spark of curiosity quickly became the place where I found confidence, purpose, and community.
Closing night, I went into the audience to greet my family when a little girl came up to me. She gave the biggest smile and crashed into my yellow dress. A random 5-year-old was hugging me because she thought I was a real princess… That’s when I knew this wasn’t a hobby, it was a dream.
From my first time stepping onto a stage to now studying and working in theatre while attending Central Methodist University, I have poured my time, energy, and heart into growing as a performer and artist. This summer, I have the incredible opportunity to attend an intensive theatre training program at Open Jar Studios in New York—an experience that would allow me to train with industry professionals, refine my craft, and build connections that could shape my future career. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse myself fully in the art form I love in the city where so much theatre history is made.
My mom has generously offered to cover the first two months of the program, but I am responsible for the final month, which totals approximately $1,500. I currently work as a tutor at Central Methodist, earning about $120 per month. With only three months left in the school year—and factoring in weeks I won’t be able to work—I will earn around $300 before the end of May. That leaves me needing $1,200 to meet my financial obligation to the studio. I am committed to working hard and contributing everything I can, but I cannot close this gap alone. Your support would not just help fund a trip—it would invest in years of dedication, passion, and a dream I have been building since I first discovered the stage. Every donation, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to continuing my journey in theatre and making the most of this life-changing opportunity.
