My wife Liz is 61 years old and has faced serious health challenges for many years. She’s a blind diabetic, and her journey with diabetes began during her pregnancy with our daughter Sabrina, though it wasn’t diagnosed until years later. The ups and downs of her blood sugar led to depression, but with good insurance at the time, we were able to get her the care she needed. For a while, her health stabilized, but as her diabetes worsened, she lost her vision. Despite this, Liz has shown incredible resilience. She enjoys listening to TV shows, insists on washing dishes, and keeps her sense of humor. She’s a devoted Cubs fan and continues to find joy in everyday life, even as she navigates these challenges.

Recently, Liz developed a severe cough and had to be taken to the ER. After insurance paid their small share, we were left with a large hospital bill, plus numerous doctor bills. Our insurance now costs a significant amount each month and covers very little, making it hard to keep up. On top of medical expenses, essential car repairs have pushed our credit card debt to a difficult level. My daughter Sabrina, who is in her 30s, stays home to care for Liz, which is a huge help, but it means she’s putting her own life on hold. I work as a courier and dispatcher in Chicago, but the income is unpredictable, and I have to be available around the clock to make ends meet. The stress of mounting bills and the uncertainty of work have taken a toll, and today I received notice that one of our bills has been sent to collections.

Because of these financial difficulties, we’re also having to delay other essential needs. Our dryer and oven are both broken, so we wash clothes at home and drive to the laundromat to dry them, and we can’t safely use the oven due to a gas leak. We need a plumber for the toilet and bathroom sink, but with debt like this, it’s unthinkable to address these problems. There are other minor issues in our home, but our focus has to be on the most urgent bills.

We’re asking for help to address our most urgent needs: paying down the credit cards that are maxed out, covering doctor bills, making a dent in the hospital bill, and hopefully starting to address some of these essential repairs at home. Any support will help us stabilize our finances and focus on Liz’s health and well-being. Thank you for reading our story and considering a donation to help our family through this difficult time.
