Support Liz Nead and her Family

Donación protegida
On Thursday, December 9, Liz underwent emergency open heart surgery due to an aortic dissection (a tear in the aortic blood vessel) that occurred. Liz currently is at Genesis East in Davenport, Iowa (25 minutes from her home in LeClaire, IA) on an in-patient unit in recovery. Thank you for helping support the Nead family during this time. The funds raised from this Go Fund Me will go toward medical bills, groceries, gas money, and other needs the Nead Family has during this time while Liz can't work. At this time, Liz is stable and making improvements everyday.

STORY:
On Wednesday, December 8, Liz was complaining of chest pain and discomfort in the evening after her daughter Kendall’s basketball game in Milwaukee. Thankfully, Liz and Ken were able to make it to the Genesis East Emergency Room around midnight in Davenport, Iowa where she was admitted. The doctors did find that she had some fluid around her heart and some inflammation, so they told her it was most likely pericarditis, a fairly common and treatable diagnosis. They scheduled a pericardiocentesis to drain the fluid around her heart as well as an angiogram to make sure there were no blockages in the late morning of Thursday, December 9.

During this procedure, they found that it was not pericarditis, but rather, an ascending aortic aneurysm that was dissecting. She needed to be rushed into emergency open-heart surgery.

The surgery began on Thursday, December 9 around 12 PM and lasted until 7 PM. During the surgery, there were some complications with the anesthesia and the quickly worsening condition of her heart, and she arrested on the operating table. Through the grace and presence of God, and the skill of her surgical team led by Dr. Edward Coleman, they were able to bring her heart back, open her up, cool her body down, and begin surgery.

The procedure lasted hours, but she was able to remain stable throughout. Dr. Coleman was able to repair her aorta by placing a graft, essentially a sleeve that replaces, protects and strengthens the aorta. Thankfully the tear in her aorta did not occur deeper to the valve or to other crucial arteries so no additional valve replacements or corrections were needed. Dr. Coleman explained that the graft held very well and outside of the start, there were little complications.

Since Liz had been out of surgery, she has been surrounded by her children and husband during the strict visiting hours of 9 AM to 8 PM (a COVID policy). She is staying at Genesis East in Davenport and will remain there until we see further progress. She was able to move out of the ICU on Friday, December 17 and onto a step down unit. Again -- another amazing feat!

Her care team has been encouraged and confident by the progress she has made since her surgery, but want to make sure that we give her enough time to heal and rest. While we do not know any long term effects from the surgery and her cardiac arrest, we feel encouraged by Liz’s ability to drink from a straw, give a smile, open her eyes, itch her nose, squeeze hands, say words, sing along with songs, stand (with assistance), and respond to commands.  Her progress is unsurprising considering how traumatic the surgery was on her body. That all being said, Dr. Coleman performed the surgery using cutting-edge techniques (Praise God he was in the hospital when he was) that should help with her long-term recovery.

Her care team has been consistently encouraged by the great strides they have seen from Liz, so far. We will do our best to keep everyone updated as we can on Liz's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/liznead

We are asking for the following prayers for Liz and her family:

     1. Full neurological recovery.
     2. Stay off the ventilator.
     3. Continued improvements with speech and responsiveness.
     4. For Liz to become fully lucid and awake.
     5. Comfort for Liz, her husband, and her children, Jordan, Andrew, Faith, & Kendall.

Thank you, to everyone, for your prayers, love, support, texts, calls, money, gift cards, and everything in between during this time. If you have any ideas to help support the Nead family during this time, reach out to Allie Boge (Andrew’s wife) at [teléfono editado].
