The Little Village 7/8 grade boys soccer team in Chicago is made up of 25 incredible students who show up every day, despite facing many challenges in their lives and community. These young athletes are not only dedicated to the sport, but also to each other—they support one another, build each other up, and create a positive environment where everyone feels valued. As their coach and teacher, I see firsthand how much soccer means to them and how it helps them cope with stress and uncertainty.

Many of my players come to practice in their everyday gym shoes, which they also wear as part of their school uniform. Some have never owned a proper pair of soccer shoes or shin guards, and I want to give them the opportunity to play safely and confidently. With our first game today and the season running through late November, my goal is to surprise them with new gear by the third game. I know how much it would mean to them to have the right equipment and to feel supported by their coaches and community.

Recently, I joined my team on the field for practice—a moment they had been asking for, but I had always declined due to injuries. Playing alongside them before their first game, I saw their joy and excitement firsthand. They encouraged each other, celebrated wins, and lifted each other up after missed goals. This spirit of teamwork and positivity is what makes this group so special, and it’s the culture I want to continue building.
