The Black August Book Drive is a heartfelt community project dedicated to uplifting Black and Brown students by nurturing their literacy skills and celebrating the rich history of Black August. This initiative honors the legacy of Black Resistance, Freedom Fighters, and Political Prisoners, while creating a safe and welcoming space for learning. Throughout August, we are collecting book and cash donations to reach our goal of distributing 1000 books to students in our community. By placing book drop locations at local businesses and hosting fundraisers, we hope to provide a diverse selection of books for every child—whether they already love reading or are just discovering its joys.
The need for this project is urgent. Illiteracy rates are at an all-time high, with only one-third of students able to read above a third-grade level. This crisis disproportionately affects marginalized Black and Brown youth, who are most vulnerable to the school-to-prison pipeline. By promoting reading and writing, we aim to empower these students, offering them a healthy form of escapism and a path to brighter futures. Every book and donation helps us foster a love of learning, keep kids off the streets, and protect those most at risk.
We invite you to support the Black August Book Drive by contributing books of any subject, genre, or reading level, or by making a cash donation to our GoFundMe. Your generosity will help us create a safe communal space and provide students with the resources they need to thrive. Together, we can make a lasting impact and inspire a new generation of readers.
