Just four years ago, my mother faced the harrowing journey of breast cancer, an experience that has deeply shaped my perspective and fueled my determination to stand strong in the face of adversity. Now, life has delivered a similar blow, as I find myself grappling with a diagnosis of triple positive invasive ductal carcinoma (a form of breast cancer).
For fifteen years, I've dedicated myself to the profession of nursing, serving diligently in the ICU at Holy Cross Hospital and currently, as an instructor at the University of New Mexico - Taos. Yet, despite my years of caregiving, I now stand in need of care myself.
The road through cancer treatment is daunting and fraught with challenges both financial and emotional. The copays for treatment are quickly adding up, creating a burden that weighs heavily on our family's shoulders. Despite the security of full-time employment and medical insurance, the weight of these expenses continues to grow, threatening to overwhelm. The frequent journeys to the Nexus Cancer Center in Santa Fe will only add to the burden, a burden I cannot bear alone.
In this time of need, my son, parents, and I come together, pooling our resources to support me on this journey. Their unwavering love and encouragement are the bedrock upon which I lean.
With a heavy heart but a hopeful spirit, I extend my hand to you today. Seeking assistance isn't something I take lightly. I've always prided myself on my independence, and asking for help has never come easily to me. Yet, through this trial, I've come to understand that genuine strength isn't solely found in self-reliance, but also in the courage to seek support from others.
Your contribution, regardless of size, would not only help to alleviate the financial strain we face but also serve as a beacon of hope in the darkness. Donations will be used for:
- Medical copays and out-of-pocket expenses
- Travel costs to and from Santa Fe
- Prescription medications and supplements
- Medical equipment, treatments and therapies not covered by insurance.
- Daily living expenses during treatment, such as groceries and utilities
-Expenses related to surgical recovery
As I am able, both mentally and physically, I continue to pick up shifts at the hospital to contribute to our needs. However, I am preparing for when I no longer have the strength to work extra shifts and my parents will take on the majority of the heavy lifting.
From the depths of my being, I offer profound gratitude for considering my plea and for standing alongside myself and my family as we navigate this uncharted terrain together.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Lisa
