Support Lindsay’s Recovery After 4 Major Surgeries

As some of you know, My wife Lindsay and I were expected to bring our son into the world on 5/20. Our son is doing fine and I cannot wait to formally introduce him together with my wife to our greater network of family and friends, but I wanted to take a moment to share Lindsay Kate Crawford story as it has been an incredibly intense and scary 10 days.

My wife Lindsay has endured an unimaginable series of medical emergencies immediately following the birth of our second child. Following a scary and complicated delivery that put our newborn in the ICU for several days, Lindsay suffered two severe hemorrhages within the immediate two hours of giving birth. Doctors attempted to stop bleeding but were forced to rush her into a emergency last option, a life saving and life altering surgery to save her life, during which she received over 10 liters of blood. Unfortunately, this led to further complications with her body’s ability to heal and clot. During the surgery, a part of her kidney was also knicked, requiring another immediate operation. After seven hours, Lindsay was finally stabilized and moved to the ICU, but her ordeal was far from over.

She immediately experienced internal bleeding upon arriving to the ICU and after spending several hours trying to keep her stable, she required yet another emergency life saving surgery that very same evening. The following days were filled with extreme pain and setbacks for Lindsay, including a severe ileus that left her being sick every 30 minutes for 12 hours overnight, unable to eat and violently ill for hours until doctors could intervene and put in a ENG tube the remains to this day. To put this into perspective, it is June 1st now, Lindsay has not eaten since May 19th.

Recently, and most devastatingly, on Tuesday 5/28, less than a week after giving birth and having 3 major surgeries on the same day, and while still fighting to recover, early in the morning while talking to her mother, she experienced a sharp pain in her chest that shot up to her face. Her mother called for help and a team rushed in. She had suffered a sudden aortic dissection, a imminent life threatening tear in her main artery. She was rushed from Frederick Memorial to UMMC for an 11 hour open heart surgery to repair her Aorta and damaged vessels to her head, fingers, and toes. Lindsay is now recovering in the ICU, facing a long road ahead, but she continues to show incredible strength despite ongoing setbacks.

Currently she has made a partial recovery with some lingering temporary limited mobility along with some additional complications she is still fighting through, most of which she and doctors are hopeful she is to recover from eventually in the weeks, months, year ahead.

I do want to assure you despite all, Lindsay is recovering, stable, and as well as she can be. She is talking and is the highlight of the day for her wonderful nurses and the overall excellent team at UMMC, even as she begs them for a never ending supply of ice chips for comfort. She remains as sharp, funny, and beautiful as always. At her current pace, she is expected to remain in the ICU for roughly two more weeks, making it nearly a consecutive month in a ICU at two seperate hospitals.

We are facing mounting medical bills, lost income, extra costs for Lindsay’s care and recovery and I am extending my leave from work to care for Lindsay, our newborn, and our 2.5-year-old daughter Willow. We have already been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and coworkers, many of whom have asked how they can help. I would also like to thank One Medical, Lindsay's employer who immediately set up their own personal internal company support page for their team members to participate in. I loved reading Lindsay messages of support and seeing her eyes shoot open wide as I read her the names and messages of her fellow teammates, along with the messages from our friends and family who have reached out to support her and let her known she is loved and cared for.

Our personal friends and family have continued to ask us how they can help. That’s why we’ve created this Support Page. To inform friends and family of Lindsays ordeal and strength, and for those who wish to donate, share, or offer encouragement.

Thank you so much for continuing to send your thoughts, prayers, positive energy and memories to Lindsay during these intense and scary 10 days as she fought through these surgeries and setbacks, and for supporting our family during this incredibly difficult time. All of our love goes out to you and your families ❤️
