Dear friends and supporters,
As some of you may know, I will soon graduate from the Honors College of The University of Southern Mississippi (USM)! My major in Biological Sciences (Biomedical Sciences) and double-minor in Chemistry and Spanish are coming to an end. Although my goal is to pursue a career in medicine, I have chosen to put this part of my life on pause until further notice, for my collegiate journey has been considerably rough.
At a young age, I had to grow up pretty quickly and work towards affording my own education. Thus, I studied hard in high school and earned scholarships—though not enough to fully cover undergraduate expenses. Since freshman year, I have upheld academic excellence to maintain financial aid, and in my senior year, I continue to work as a University employee to secure housing and meals.
After turning 21, I became “independent” in all senses of the word and experienced parental estrangement—as verified by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AMMC). Furthermore, I am at risk of homelessness—as verified by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Lastly, I was diagnosed with two disabilities—as verified by Student Accessibility Services (SAS)… Due to my circumstances, I experience extreme stress, which has resulted in Ws on my transcript and many outstanding bills (i.e., medical, academic, etc.).
As a 2nd-generation immigrant and 1st-generation college student, I do my best to secure life's necessities all the while acknowledging my privileges. At USM, I have done my best to leave Southern Miss better than I found it, and I sincerely hope that I was able to through the people I met. I am not usually the one to ask for help when I need it, but after some encouragement from my USM Counselor, I decided to make this GoFundMe.
Today, I humbly ask that if you are able, please consider supporting me financially as I embrace the trials of a low-income premedical student. With your assistance, I can pay off outstanding debt and continue down the road of becoming a physician. Anything is sincerely and greatly appreciated.
Much love,
Lillian
