This mutual aid request is for my dear friend Fida (Adrian), who is getting life changing/affirming top surgery in the new year! Adrian (he/him) is a 44 year old queer, transmasculine, Palestinian parent to one son and many cats—and a really valued member of the queer community here in Providence. He's lived as an out transmasculine person for the past decade and has been medically transitioning since 2016. I met Adrian through the Sista Fire community, an organizing group for women/nonbinary people of color in PVD, and he is one of the warmest and most caring and considerate spirits I have the honor of knowing. He pours so much into the places and people he cares for, particularly queer and Palestinian struggles, and spoke this year at a Mothers' Day event and Woonsocket Pride. I'm incredibly excited for Adrian to finally get top surgery and make this huge step towards being in a body that affirms him, and want him to be able to pursue this surgery without the very real concern of how much it costs. Healthcare shouldn't send us into impossible debt, and I want for Adrian the opportunity to focus on rest, recovery, and connection with community post-surgery, not life-consuming debt. Adrian already has existing debt from past medically-imperative surgeries, and your donation makes affording the surgery and a full recovery possible <3.
What Top Surgery Makes Possible, from Fida (Adrian): “"I wanted top surgery for years as I don’t feel comfortable in my own skin. It would be nice to go to a public place and not be made out as trans because of my chest–whether it’s work or going out to eat or even going to the restroom. I love to go to the beach and would love to be able to not have to be cold the entire time because of a wet shirt. And I would love to be in the ocean and feel it on my skin. So I’d really just love to be one with the ocean.”
The Rundown: Fida (aka Adrian) is having top surgery February 7, which is incredible and long awaited! This procedure is not only expensive in and of itself but has a recovery time of 6-8 weeks, in which Adrian will not be able to go grocery shopping, work, cook, or do household chores.
What $10,000 Supports With: We are hoping to raise $10,000 in mutual aid funds to support with things like surgery cost, rent, and just basic life needs. The surgery itself costs $8,400, and as Adrian has debt from undergoing other medically necessary surgeries, your donation would really, really help with making top surgery possible and preventing that debt from going more into the red.
Thank you so much!
