I'm Kelli Thompson, and I am raising funds to purchase and install a nest camera on Liberty & Justice's nest. The goal is to raise enough funds to purchase the equipment and license needed to install the camera after this nesting season.
As many of you know, two American Bald Eagles have made their home nearby since at least 2018. I've been following them since 2021. They have suffered their share of tragedy—nest failures and loss of eaglets during nesting season. Last year, I witnessed a nest failure and one eaglet fall to the ground while two others remained in what was left of the nest. We successfully rescued that eaglet, yet another one fell overnight and lost its life. Owl Ridge Raptor Center cared for the surviving fallen eaglet and hatched a plan to build a new nearby nest. That was done, and the two surviving baby eaglets were placed in the new nest. Mom and dad cared for them, and they successfully fledged in late May and early June 2025.
Liberty & Justice like the newly built rescue nest, but they decided to rebuild at their old nesting site (which is in the same tree). It's a good thing we didn't install a camera directly over the new nest before this nesting season. But if we raise funds for a camera, the hope is it can be installed to view both nests—in the event they use either nest in the future.
I consulted with the Big Bear Bald Eagle group FOBBV, who purchased and installed a nest camera for their Bald Eagles. The approximate cost of equipment, mounts, installation, and a license is $5,000. My goal is to raise all (or as much of this amount as we can) before June of 2026 so that after nesting season ends, we can install a nest camera for the future.
