A little over a month ago, my sister rescued our 11 month old puppy, Liberty (Libby), from a home where she was being neglected. Libby was kept outside for several months, in the elements, and eating whatever she could, including insects and her own stool. When my sister brought Libby to our home the following day, we all fell in love with her. We made the decision right then to be her forever family.
Soon after adopting Libby, we knew something was wrong. Libby couldn’t keep any food down, vomiting every day, and she didn't have normal puppy energy. Throughout those first few weeks, we tried different foods, while also trying to help her adjust, understanding she was probably also anxious being in her third home in such a short time.
When we took her to get spayed recently, the Humane Society ran bloodwork which indicated a few things to “keep an eye on” but nothing they deemed life threatening, and recommended us to follow up with our vet.
When our vet did her examination and tests, which included Xrays, we found out she had hookworm from her neglectful beginning. Her Xrays showed concerning masses, which we have since found out are several kidney stones and an unknown object obstructing her stomach. Most seriously, though, is her liver disease. Libby's liver disease is partly due to her rough start in life, but also from a vascular birth defect which is routing toxins from her digestive system to her blood, slowly poisoning her. This is called a PortoSystemic Shunt. The treatment for this is surgery, and our vet is optimistic that this surgery will allow Libby to live a normal, long life. She has some obstacles to overcome before her body can handle the surgery, including more diagnostic scans and rounds of medications.
We love her so very much, but this is a financial burden we weren't prepared for. If you can contribute in any way to help us with Libby's medical funds, we would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!
