Support Lia Meijer's Inspiring Thesis Film Grit

Hi! My name is Lia Meijer. I’m a senior at Emerson College, and I’ve been accepted into the school’s B.A. capstone program. This fall, I’ll be directing my thesis film, Grit!

Grit is a 20 minute coming-of-age short about Simone, a troubled teen who is sent to a rehab center. At first, she resists help, but when she’s placed on the center’s struggling basketball team, she begins to form unexpected friendships and finds a second chance.

This story comes from a very personal place. Growing up, I witnessed the impact of addiction on someone close to me, and how it reshaped the lives of those around them. I remember the visits at rehab centers, the tension in the air, and the emotional weight that lingered afterward. But I also remember the people who helped me through it. Friends and family who reminded me that healing doesn’t have to happen alone. That experience taught me about resilience, forgiveness, and the importance of having a support system.

As a queer person and former female athlete, I also understand what it’s like to fight for space in environments that don’t always make room for you. That’s part of what draws me to tell stories about identity, belonging, and the strength it takes to rebuild. Grit is about more than just basketball. It’s about learning to trust, showing up for others, and discovering who you are through the struggle.

The funds raised here will go directly toward feeding the cast and crew, renting locations, covering transportation, and paying for props, costumes, and other production essentials. I’m lucky to be working with my brilliant producers Bel, Adeline, and Gracie, along with an incredible cast and crew made up predominantly of female and nonbinary filmmakers. This project is a collaborative effort built on shared values of care, creativity, and representation, and I couldn’t ask for a better team.
