The Science professors at Southern Wesleyan University are fundraising for one of our seniors, Lexi Mathis. Lexi is a pre-medical major who is working nights at an area hospital emergency room while she finishes her degree in May 2022. This semester has been an extreme challenge for her and her family.
In September, Lexi had a recurrence of kidney stones that have plagued her throughout her undergraduate career. Soon after, her whole family was diagnosed with COVID-19 despite Lexi being vaccinated. Both her mother and step-father were hospitalized due to their infections. Sadly her stepfather passed away due to COVID-19 on October 21.
These events have created a big financial need for Lexi and her mother. They have been unable to have a funeral or complete final arrangements for her stepfather since they do not have the funds to pay for this. But they also have many other bills that have accumulated while the breadwinners of the family were in the hospital for an extended time (medical bills from the hospital, medications, and mental health care; housing expenses; insurance bills). This has also prevented Lexi from completing secondary applications for medical school, since these have a cost to submit.
Your donation will have an immediate impact for Lexi as she looks toward her future opportunities. This will allow their family to finally complete the final arrangements for her stepfather but also pay the many bills that accumulated during the extended time of illness and hospitalization.
Please support this student as she is trying to complete her own degree, care for her recovering mother, take steps for her future, all while handling the family finances and processing her grief over this loss. The financial strain has been a major burden while trying to navigate the day to day demands on her time.
