Hi, my name is Leticia, or Irma, or for those that know me as Leti. First off, I want to say thank you to each of you that has been through this journey with me. It’s hard for me to ask for help, but I’m in need of it. I’ve been going through a number of health problems for many years (diagnosed with Graves’ disease in 2010, then Hashimoto's in 2011, then a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) in 2012 and had to have emergency lung surgery), but I’ve always been open and honest about my health. None of this would have prepared me for this last year, which was supposed to be a routine (you turned 40) check-up. It turned into a routine mammogram, and then a week later, a biopsy. Then, a week later, I had to decide: have a mastectomy or take my chances. I chose what I thought was best: a mastectomy.
I had surgery in August 2024, then the next day, I had internal bleeding and had to have emergency surgery. Then, two weeks later, I followed up, and he said we have to do another surgery. I rejected the procedure, and then another two weeks later, I went back and yet again had to have an additional surgery. That takes a toll on a person: four surgeries in five weeks. My main concern throughout all of this was my three kids at home, being that I’ve been a single mom for over four years now.
During this time, I’ve attempted to continue to work full-time in the medical field, but between being hospitalized and medical bills, I can only do so much. I recently had surgery in February 2025, and since then, had two other procedures and am getting myself ready for surgery in May 2025. Then it’s off to chemo to prevent it from spreading.
I’ve been positive, but I wish I could not fall behind on what I need to be treated, and therefore, I’m putting my ego aside and asking for help. I want to beat this and want to be the best version of myself for my family. Thank you for listening and your prayers.
