Sunset Point Marina and Resort was a growing family business that got destroyed by Hurricane Milton, along with the boats docked there; my dad, Leo, is the owner. He has worked incredibly hard, first to create it, then to maintain it. He opened the doors in 2020 in the middle of COVID, then we got Hurricane Ian, and now Helene and Milton.
My dad is not like many other business men that often inherit their money or businesses from family—he turned nothing into something so wonderful. He came from Cuba in 2003, and has worked tirelessly to build his own business and provide for his family since then. He is a hard worker with big dreams and makes friends everywhere he goes—he was made to work in hospitality, operating a home-away-from-home for guests, who he treats more like family than customers.
Our friends and family have been there helping him every day since the hurricane, removing dangerous debris, cleaning out the apartments, and trying to save the few things that are salvageable—a testament not just to the marina’s impact on those who were lucky enough to stay there, but the village of people willing to show up for our family as a result. Unfortunately, he will need more than that: He will need funds and resources to remove the sunken boats (as well as those now stranded on land) and to rebuild the marina itself. Our, small, family-owned business is facing over $1.5 million in repairs, not including damages to the boats that are part of the rental business and those of our customers. We are not looking to cover full repair costs and understand there are others in need of help that have suffered through this hurricane. Therefore, we have decided to set our goal to $100,000 to help with the urgent costs of cleanup and to get our family business back on its feet. We appreciate any help; no donations are too small. Any amount will greatly aid our family and the reconstruction of this property—a dream 20 years in the making. Thank you very much for your help, our family truly appreciates it.
