My name is Jennifer Hamilton-Helm. I am the daughter of Leonard Helm. My dad unexpectedly passed away at his home on Saturday, January 18th around 11:48 pm of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. He was 69 years young. My dad was extremely fit and healthy, so as you can imagine, this is a complete shock for his family and his wife of 33 years, Najla Helm.
Leonard was a cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He touched the lives of many with his kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering loyalty. His legacy of love and joy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. Leonard was known for his easy going nature, undeniable charm, and passion for the outdoors. An avid motorcycle rider and storyteller, he found joy in talking story with family and friends.
Born on May 16, 1955, in San Mateo to Mildred Haole Helm and Alvin Helm Sr., Leonard was the second eldest of four brothers. He spent his childhood in Milpitas, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a love for adventure. From an early age, Leonard enjoyed skateboarding and riding motorcycles and dirt bikes, passions that stayed with him throughout his life.
In 1977, Leonard welcomed his greatest joy, his daughter Jennifer (ME!). As a young father, he continued to embrace life with enthusiasm, filling his weekends with family, friends, and time spent in his garage, where he loved tinkering with bikes and cars.
My dad moved to Grass Valley in 2001, something he always wanted to do. He kept up with 10 acres of beautiful landscape, creeks, and a pond. He traded in his fast motorcycles for a bicycle and rode 20+ miles almost every day! He walked up and down his 10 acres of property over the last 24 years, definitely racking up hundreds of miles walking and hiking. Over the last couple of years, he has spent his days caring for Najla, who sustained a spinal cord injury and can no longer work.
Asking for support is something that I would not typically do, but I do know our support will be extremely helpful for Najla going forward. We plan to have him cremated, purchase an urn online (Hawaiian themed), and I really want to organize an amazing Hawaiian kine Celebration of Life in the Milpitas area. Any funds remaining will help with their monthly mortgage. I thank you for any amount that you can spare and hope to see you when we celebrate my dad's amazing life.
