Support Lenchito's Family in Their Time of Grief

With heavy hearts, we honor the life of Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas known to family and friends as “Lenchito”, a beloved son, brother, and friend, who passed away far too soon at the age of 32 while in ICE custody in Florence, Arizona.

His passing is a tragedy compounded by the circumstances under which he died; alone, likely from complications of COVID-19, and without the medical attention he deserved. No one should have to suffer in silence, and no family should have to wonder whether their loved one’s life could have been spared with more compassion, more care, or more justice.

From a young age, he struggled with the weight of growing up in the shadows; navigating a system that often failed to see him, to support him, to value his life.

The light came through in the way he loved his family. In the tenderness he showed to those he trusted. He had a great, generous heart. He was more than his pain, more than his past. He was a human who was worthy of love, of care, of dignity.

We remember him not only for his struggles but also for the joy he brought to those around him, for the way he could make you feel seen, even when he often felt invisible himself. We remember his smile, his warmth, and the dreams he carried, even when they seemed just out of reach.

As we say goodbye, we are also trying to bring him home, physically and spiritually. We are raising funds to help cover funeral expenses and to bring Lenchito back from Florence, AZ to Flagstaff, AZ, where his family can lay him to rest with the love and dignity he deserves.

Hoy, con un profundo dolor, honramos la vida de Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, conocido por familiares y amigos como "Lenchito", un querido hijo, hermano y amigo, que falleció demasiado pronto a la edad de 32 años mientras estaba bajo la custodia de ICE en Florence, Arizona.

Su fallecimiento es una tragedia traída por las circunstancias en las que murió; solo, probablemente por complicaciones de la COVID-19, y sin la atención médica que él se merecía. Nadie debería tener que sufrir en silencio solo, y ninguna familia debería tener que preguntarse si la vida de su ser querido podría haberse librado con más compasión, más cuidado o más justicia.

Desde muy joven, luchó con el peso de crecer en las sombras; navegando por un sistema que a nunca no lo vio, lo apoyaba, valoraba su vida.

La luz llegó a través de la forma en que amaba a su familia. En la ternura que mostró a aquellos en los que confiaba. Tenía un gran y generoso corazón. Él era más que su dolor, más que su pasado. Era un humano digno de amor, de cuidado, de dignidad.

Lo recordamos no solo por sus luchas, sino también por la alegría que trajo a quienes lo rodeaban, por la forma en que podía hacerte sentir visto, incluso cuando él se sentía invisible. Recordamos su sonrisa, su calidez y los sueños que llevaba, incluso cuando parecían fuera de su alcance.

Mientras nos despedimos, también estamos tratando de traerlo a casa, físicamente y espiritualmente. Estamos recaudando fondos para ayudar a cubrir los gastos funerarios y traer a Lenchito de vuelta de Florence, AZ a Flagstaff, AZ, donde su familia puede dejarlo descansar con el amor y la dignidad que se merece.
