My name is Leland Penney and I have stage 4 prostate cancer which is getting worse every week. I also have heart failure and many secondary issues that prevent me from being able to live on my own and do things for myself. I had to move out of my home, which I have lived in for many years, because I could no longer afford the payments. I was lucky enough to be able to move in with my son, who has become my full-time caregiver. I have to have a lot of help every day with mundane tasks as I can no longer do them on my own. Things like standing, fixing meals, and even operating the TV have become difficult for me. My son was able to take FMLA but has since exhausted its benefits and was forced to resign his position to provide care for me as I am no longer able to care for myself.
I haven’t been out of the house in over a year as I am unable to navigate the steps on the porch even with assistance. We cannot afford to have a ramp built. We were able to purchase a Total Care hospital bed, but upon delivery, it did not work, and we are unable to afford to have it fixed. We had to purchase it used as they are very expensive new. We are having a rough time paying bills because neither one of us has income that covers our monthly expenses. My son has cashed out his retirement to provide for us this far, but we are now at the end of that money. I have also used up all that I had saved for retirement. I do get social security, which helps out quite a bit, but doesn’t quite make the ends meet, if you know what I mean. I’m lucky to have a son that has given up his job and career to take care of me. If anyone out there can help, it would be both amazing and greatly appreciated. Giving when you can, helping someone in need when you are able — it will be a great reward that you are giving to help others in distress. Any donations would be used to pay our monthly bills, fix the hospital bed, build a ramp, purchase needed medical equipment, medication, food and general expenses of living. We are having a tough time meeting all of our monthly expenses and obtaining all of the needed supplies, equipment, medication etc.
I sincerely thank you for reading my brief yet muted story and pray that you never have to suffer and that you always maintain your health and livelihood.
God bless.
