Leda is a single mother, a passionate community activist, and a dear friend I’ve known for five years. We first met while collecting signatures for a petition at a BLM protest in 2020, and since then, we’ve become union sisters, working side by side to support public education and help struggling neighbors. Her daughter, a high school junior and club soccer player, recently suffered a serious knee injury, tearing her ACL and meniscus. She’ll need pre-therapy, surgery, and months of physical therapy to recover. On top of this, Leda’s car needs urgent repairs—brakes, tires, and general maintenance. To make matters even more difficult, their rent has increased substantially. Normally, Leda and her daughter referee soccer games to help cover costs, but with her daughter’s injury and the many medical appointments, that extra income is no longer possible.
