Support Learning By Locals in Delhi’s Sanjay Colony Slum
We are the Global Impact Initiative (GII)—a student-led effort at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. As part of our Global Executive MBA program, we travel internationally to explore how culture and institutions shape business. GII was founded by students Melissa Galarraga and Brenda Arellano, inspired by a shared vision to uplift the communities that graciously welcome us, creating a meaningful and lasting impact wherever we go.
At GII, our mission is simple yet significant: to empower and enrich the lives of underserved children and youth through hands-on volunteerism and fundraising efforts during our global residencies—offering hope and opportunity for a brighter future.
This quarter, our journey takes us to New Delhi, India, where we are honored to partner with Learning by Locals (LBL)—a grassroots nonprofit based in the heart of Sanjay Colony, a low-income neighborhood in Delhi's industrial district.
About Learning by Locals
Sanjay Colony lies in the heart of New Delhi’s industrial area, Okhla—a community where resilience meets aspiration. Amidst its narrow lanes and vibrant spirit, a beacon of hope shines brightly: Learning by Locals (LBL). This registered nonprofit was founded by local leaders determined to uplift their community through education, skill-building, and creative expression, paving the way for a brighter future.
Their programs include:
• Literacy Development: Cultivating reading and writing skills to unlock self-expression and lifelong learning.
• Digital Literacy: Teaching basic computer skills to bridge the digital divide in an increasingly tech-driven world.
• Creative Storytelling: Offering filmmaking workshops that empower youth to tell their own stories, guided by local artists and mentors.
A Glimpse into Sanjay Colony
Sanjay Colony is a place of vibrant spirit and resilience. Residents collect drinking water from communal tankers and navigate challenges like limited access to sanitation and education. Yet hope endures—through the unity of its people and the transformative work of organizations like LBL.
As captured in this video blog by LBL’s students, the children of Sanjay Colony possess "big, bright dreams" despite the adversity around them. LBL gives these dreams a chance to grow.
Your Role in This Journey
Your support can amplify our impact. Donations enable LBL to:
• Expand their educational programs to reach more youth.
• Provide necessary resources like books, computers, and filmmaking equipment.
• Train and support our dedicated team of educators and mentors.

Our Goal: Raise $5,000 to Support Their Mission
We are raising $5,000 USD, which will go directly to Learning by Locals to help them continue offering education and skill-building programs to over 400 children and youth in Sanjay Colony.
This support will help:
- Fund educational resources and teaching materials
- Provide stipends for young women in the Emerge Fellowship
- Expand access to technology, workshops, and trade-school readiness
- Keep their center running as a safe and empowering learning space
