Hello! My name is Layla Khoury, thank you so much for taking the time to read my story.
This past week, I was admitted to New York University —my dream school— as a transfer student, expected to start in the fall of 2026. NYU has been my dream school for a very long time, as it aligns directly with what I want to do academically and professionally, and getting accepted genuinely felt like everything I’ve been working toward these past few years coming together. Unfortunately, the cost of attendance is quite unfeasible for me and my family, coming down to roughly $100,998 a year.
I want to be clear that I am not relying on this fundraiser alone. I’ve been working to make this possible on my own: I’ve reached out to financial aid, started applying to outside scholarships, and I plan to work during the school year under federal work study to contribute as much as I can. Though, as any sensible person, I cannot count on hypotheticals.
Even with all of that, there’s still a gap. I’m asking for support in making a real attempt, because I truly believe this is the kind of opportunity that would allow me to grow into my fullest potential. There’s something about the environment at New York University that feels aligned with the way I learn and the pace I want to move at. I’m drawn to the energy, the diversity of perspectives, and the constant motion of being surrounded by people who are equally driven and globally minded. It’s the kind of setting where I know I would be challenged in the best way, both academically and personally. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what I need from my education, and I’ve realized that it’s about being in the right environment to fully step into what I’m capable of. My current institution at Penn State does not fully represent that for me, NYU does. Hence why I sought to transfer.
I’m approaching this fundraiser making it possible for me to try. I’m treating this as a serious, structured decision. If you supported my previous fundraiser for my debate team, you’ve likely already seen how much I value community and opportunity. That experience wasn’t just about attending nationals, it was about showing what’s possible when people invest in potential. I’m asking for that same belief again, this time for my education and future.
Every contribution, no matter the size, helps move me closer to a path where I can continue advocating, learning, and working toward a more just and connected world. If this resonates with you and you’re able to contribute or share, I’d appreciate it beyond words. Thank you again for taking the time to read this.
