On June 13, 2025, after 3 years on the United States national transplant waiting list (UNOS), our 3.5-year-old son, Lavi Rafael, underwent a rare and high-risk 5-organ transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. The procedure included transplantation of the small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, and stomach – one of the most complex surgical operations in modern medicine.

Lavi’s journey began in Israel, where he was born with short bowel syndrome. At only two weeks old, doctors were forced to remove his entire intestines, leaving him without a functioning digestive system and dependent on intravenous nutrition. In 2022, we made the painful decision to leave our home, family, and community in Israel and relocate to Miami, in order to save his life and give him access to this rare transplant.

Since the surgery, Lavi has remained in intensive care for over 145 days, fighting for his life each day. Despite the doctors’ most pessimistic predictions, his survival is considered nothing less than a miracle.

Now we face the most challenging stage: the recovery period. This requires ongoing medical treatments, daily rehabilitative physiotherapy, the support of private nurses, and specialized equipment to address his cerebral palsy (CP). These needs come with overwhelming medical expenses that continue to rise every day.

We, Ben Zion and Olga Cohen, Lavi’s parents, believe with all our hearts that G-d has guided us to this point for a reason. This is the most critical moment in our son’s life – and together with your support, we can continue this miracle.

Every contribution, large or small, keeps Lavi alive and brings him one step closer to leaving the hospital and finally coming home.

ב-13 ביוני 2025, לאחר 3 שנות המתנה ברשימת ההשתלות הלאומית של ארצות הברית (UNOS), עבר בננו, לביא רפאל, בן 3.5, ניתוח נדיר ומסוכן של השתלת 5 איברים בבית החולים Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida. הניתוח כלל השתלה של מעי דק, מעי גס, כבד, לבלב וקיבה – והוא נחשב לאחד ההליכים הכירורגיים המורכבים ביותר הקיימים כיום ברפואה.

לביא הגיע למצב זה לאחר שנולד בישראל עם תסמונת המעי הקצר, ובגיל כשבועיים בלבד נאלצו הרופאים לכרות את כל המעיים שלו. מאז חי ללא מערכת עיכול מתפקדת, וניזון אך ורק דרך הזנה תוך-ורידית. בשנת 2022 נאלצנו לעזוב את ישראל – את הבית, המשפחה והחיים שבנינו – ולעבור למיאמי שבפלורידה, כדי להציל את חייו ולאפשר לו להגיע להשתלה נדירה זו.

מאז ההשתלה שוכב לביא כבר למעלה מ- 145 ימים בבית הרפואה, ונלחם על חייו בכל יום מחדש. למרות התחזיות הפסימיות, עצם היותו איתנו עד היום נחשב לנס של ממש.

כעת אנו מתמודדים עם השלב הקשה ביותר – תקופת ההחלמה. זו דורשת טיפולים רפואיים מתמשכים, פיזיותרפיה יומיומית, ליווי של אחיות פרטיות, וציוד מיוחד הנדרש להתמודדות עם שיתוק מוחין. לכל אלה מתווספות הוצאות רפואיות כבדות, ההולכות ותופחות מדי יום.

אנחנו, בן ציון ואולגה כהן, הוריו של לביא, מאמינים באמונה שלמה שהקדוש ברוך הוא הוביל אותנו עד הלום לא במקרה. זהו הזמן הקריטי ביותר בחייו של בננו – וביחד איתכם נוכל להמשיך את הנס הזה.

כל תרומה, קטנה או גדולה, מחזיקה את לביא בחיים ומקרבת אותו לרגע שבו יוכל לעזוב את בית החולים ולחזור הביתה.
