Laura, a retired mental health clinician who dedicated her career to helping high needs and at risk youth, recently faced a life threatening medical emergency while in Mexico.

After being diagnosed with a 98% blocked main artery, she urgently needed a stent placement. She had to pay out of pocket at The Heart Center in West Ajijic, only to discover that the doctor failed to insert the stent. Instead, she was overcharged for a diagnostic scope and was escorted directly from recovery to the bank by a nurse to pay the bill.

Fortunately, Laura was able to have a successfully placed stent back in the US and the doctors confirmed her suspicions that she had been overcharged by thousands and thousands of dollars for an incomplete procedure in Mexico.

Between the failed over priced surgery and emergency travel, Laura has spent over $15,000 out of pocket which is a devastating amount for someone living on a fixed retirement income.
